Encourage children in their learning and encourage self-belief. We will do this by Motivating each other and ourselves. Listening to people at all times. Being enthusiastic and happy. Going to bed early. Being positive. Having dreams and ambitions.
Forest School at St Michael in the Hamlet offers a unique hands-on outdoor natural learning experience on our grounds that compliments both the school’s ethos and curriculum.
We use a holistic approach in a natural woodland setting to focus on building positive personal attributes such as self-confidence, independence, and self-esteem enabling our children to become independent, innovative, and inspired learners.
Our outdoor environment gives us a unique place that we use in a fun and challenging way, where learners may choose to follow a suggested activity or to pursue their ideas so they can further their development and practice new skills.
Learners are offered the opportunity to work independently or with others use tools, make dens, explore, create, investigate and experience campfires.
At St. Michael in the Hamlet Primary School, we believe that sport plays an important part as it contributes to the health and well-being of our children. Sporting excellence and participation, alongside strong cultural opportunities, go hand in hand with academic standards.
Our school has achieved The National Sport England 'Gold Athletics Award' every year for the past 6 years which continues our proud record in this sport.
In 2013/14 our Years 3 and 4 Indoor Athletics Squad became Liverpool Champions. At the same time, our Years 5 and 6 Indoor Athletics Squad also became Liverpool Champions. A Very successful season.
Our St. Michael in the Hamlet Creative Curriculum works for hand in hand with the 2014 Primary National Curriculum. We teach through a carefully planned thematic approach, valuing a broad and balanced curriculum that gives children the opportunities to achieve their potential in all subject areas. We have designed our curriculum to build on children’s prior learning over time, linking key concepts across subjects as well as developing a breadth of subject knowledge. Topics are designed to support children’s natural curiosity and stimulate their creativity.
Topics begin with a ‘hook’ or ‘opening event’ and finish with a ‘final celebration’. Trips and outings are central to the children’s learning. In addition to this, they will have a series of memorable learning experiences, which may include inspirational speakers, STEM workshops, LJMU dance students, global students, topic-themed days, and themed weeks.
Some subjects may be taught discreetly, such as English and mathematics. Other subjects may be taught as part of a topic, for example, they may learn history alongside their geography, or science alongside their design technology. Where possible the links have been made from their topic work to maths and English to enable pupils to apply skills in different contexts.
Our curriculum promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental, philosophical, and physical development of our pupils. The children experience these through a wide range of subjects and opportunities such as Physical Education (PE), Religious Education (RE), Philosophy for Children (P4C), Rights Respecting School Agenda (RRSA), mindfulness, forest school and personal, social health education (PHSSE).
We are proud of our wider opportunities and the range of after-school clubs on offer, from magic to dodge ball to e-cadets. We end our academic year with a ‘summer festival’ to display our pupils’ creative talents celebrating our diverse array of wider opportunities such as singing, brass, drumming, and violin.
