Welcome to St Vincent de Paul Catholic Primary School. St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Primary School has a long and proud tradition of serving the maritime parish of St. Vincent de Paul.
Our school follows the tradition of our patron as it places Christ at its center as our community works to create an environment in which Gospel values are lived out and encapsulated in our Mission Statement of “Serving with Love, Striving for Excellence.”
Our Catholic School exists to create and sustain an environment that has Christ and His teachings at its very heart. It is based on the belief that everything of worth comes from God and by working in partnership with priests, parishioners, and our families, we can establish a community of love, peace, and harmony between all in a climate of mutual trust and openness.
We encourage our children to develop their academic potential and individual talents, giving all children confidence and self-esteem through praise, encouragement, and acceptance of their worth.
Our children are our raison d’ etre as we prepare them to take their place in society, empowering them to become responsible citizens who will contribute positively, locally, nationally, and globally. The core British values include Democracy, Individual Liberty, The Rule of Law, Mutual Respect, Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs.
Our core curriculum is made up of English, Maths, Science, PE, and Religious Studies. The English curriculum consists of Reading, Writing, SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar), and Phonics. Pie Corbett’s Talk4Writing is used alongside resources to ensure children have access to a rich and stimulating curriculum.
Talk for Writing, is powerful because it is based on the principles of how children learn. It is powerful because it enables children to imitate the language they need for a particular topic orally before reading and analyzing it and then writing their version.
The children at St Vincent’s have been using this approach from the Early Years to Year 6 for several years. The approach has dramatically improved pupil happiness, confidence, and skill in writing, reading, and speaking. As our children have built a bank of language, including vocabulary, their desire to write and read has also improved.
In addition to this approach, high-quality CPD ensures that children’s writing has a purpose, often finding work shared or even published through a variety of media. Projects such as ‘The Writing’s on the Wall’ have resulted in published work the children can truly be proud of.
In the Early Years and Key Stage 1, children follow the Read, Write Inc scheme solely for the teaching of phonics, leading into early reading.
The teaching of Maths has been revolutionized over the last year with St Vincent’s investing in the Singapore Mastery Approach – ‘Maths No Problem’. Children are enjoying Maths lessons more than ever.
The Learning Challenge concept is built around the principle of greater learner involvement in their work resulting in a meaningful curriculum that promotes high standards. It is an approach to structuring and delivering the curriculum with a focus on the challenge and basic skills. It is underpinned by a secure pedagogical framework that weaves together the critical elements of curriculum, teaching, and learning, and assessment.
