Our Lady of Lourdes’s Catholic Primary School is an inclusive and welcoming school. We offer a range of provisions to support children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities to ensure that all pupils, regardless of their specific needs, make the best possible progress in school.
Legislative changes in the Children & Families Act require schools to have a different approach to the management and provision for pupils that have a Special Educational Need or Disability (SEND). These changes became law on 1st September 2014 and at this point, all schools were required to publish information about how they support SEND in their school.
The aim is to ensure that where possible, all pupils will have their needs met in a mainstream school with access to the right resources, professional experts, and the best teaching. This will ensure progress all over time. For some children and young people, a mainstream setting will not be the right place so that they get the best provision to meet their needs.
Children, young people, and their families are more involved in decisions about the support they receive. Education, Health & Care Plans are developed to support children who have significant additional needs and these plans will very often involve other agencies outside the school. Schools will still maintain records about pupils who have additional needs in a single school-based category called “School Support”. At Our Lady of Lourdes, we separate this by age.
Seven areas of learning and development must shape educational programs in early years settings. All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected. Three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships, and thrive.
All pupils will be challenged within their ability with the ablest pupils (those on track to achieve “Greater Depth”) offered early opportunities to explore their learning at an advanced level. With this in mind, we will also not routinely move pupils into a higher year groups curriculum since the aim of the New Curriculum is to achieve a much broader knowledge and understanding at each year group rather than racing ahead with knowledge.
At Our Lady of Lourdes, our children engage with all subjects of the National Curriculum either as weekly subjects or in a block of intense learning. The approach we use allows all pupils to have the maximum opportunity to attain and enjoy their learning through a range of exciting and valuable learning experiences.
