Mossbourne Riverside Academy is one of a group of academies arising from the realization of Sir Clive Bourne’s dream to provide the children of Hackney with an outstanding education. Mossbourne Riverside Academy follows a formula of high expectations, doing the simple things right, and holds the belief that all children can succeed. Our calm working atmosphere helps to create well-rounded pupils who excel academically, in the arts, and on the sporting field.
In September 2016 our new building opened on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. It is here on this prestigious site that we will expand over the years to become a three-form entry primary academy. Our first cohorts of pupils will be very special because they will be the example to all future years and will be pioneers in making another outstanding Mossbourne academy.
Mossbourne Riverside Academy is an inclusive academy where we focus on the well-being and progress of every pupil and where all members of our community are of equal worth.
We believe that the Equality Act provides a framework to support our commitment to valuing diversity, tackling discrimination, promoting equality, and fostering good relationships between people. It also ensures that we continue to tackle issues of disadvantage and underachievement of different groups. We recognize that these duties reflect international human rights standards as expressed in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities, and the Human Rights Act 1998.
Our governors ensure clarity of vision, ethos, and strategic direction. They hold our leaders to account for the educational performance of our pupils and the performance management of staff. They oversee financial performance and make sure our money is well spent.
Mossbourne Riverside Academy is committed to serving its community. It recognizes the multi-cultural, multi-faith, and ever-changing nature of the United Kingdom. It also understands the vital role it has in ensuring that groups or individuals within the school are not subjected to intimidation or radicalization by those wishing to unduly, or illegally, influence them. It follows equal opportunities guidance which guarantees that there will be no discrimination against any individual or group, regardless of faith, ethnicity, gender, sexuality political or financial status, or similar. Mossbourne Riverside Academy is dedicated to preparing pupils for their adult life beyond the formal curriculum and ensuring that it promotes and reinforces British values to all its pupils.
English is taught through the use of reading Write Inc. (RWI) and Literacy and Language all children in KS1 and Reception are grouped according to their reading ability. Maths is taught using the Mathematics Mastery approach. As an academy, we also use the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) to enhance our curriculum. IPC is effective in enabling pupils to apply skills and knowledge acquired in English and Maths, and other curriculum areas purposefully and concretely. The school has linked all topic areas to the key skills children should learn in Science, History, Geography, DT, Computing, Art, and Music/Dance. Our children are assessed against the key objectives using a tracking tool called Classroom Monitor. This gives us a clear picture of the children’s progress against their age expected targets.
The internet hosts many exciting opportunities for education. The online world is a wonderful place for young people to explore with unpredicted opportunities for learning and creativity, but just like the real world, there are risks and dangers they should be aware of and which we should all act to protect them from. At Riverside, we encourage the use of technology as an important part of our pupils’ development but always want them to spend their time online safely. We have strong and constantly updated filters in place to protect and govern internet use. The best way to protect your children online is to be informed yourself and make it part of your day-to-day life. We spend years training our children to cross the road and stay safe away from strangers in the outside world in all the daily little messages we give them before we ever let them out there of their own. Training them to be safe online should be an equal part of these safety messages, after all, they can be out on the ‘worldwide web’ from a very young age, unsupervised at times.
The Mossbourne Riverside Parent Association – (MRPA) is a committee of parents who believe in full support of our children’s education. The committee was formed to assist and support the Academy in providing the best for its pupils.
