SPACE is the oldest higher education establishment of its profile in Russia. Its history goes back to 1832 when it was established under Emperor Nicholas I's edict as the Civil Engineering Institute. Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education "Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering" (SPACE) today is a significant educational and scientific center – the only higher educational institution in the North-Western federal region of the Russian Federation which provides complex training of specialists in engineering, architecture, transport, and environmental engineering. Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering has grand professional and pedagogic traditions and regularly updates technologies, areas, and scientific research methodology.
The University carries out bachelor, master, and specialist degree education programs in full-time, part-time, and correspondence forms of training by the approved higher professional education programs. SPACE has equipped education and scientific research laboratories and a fund of auditoria necessary for studies. The University uses modern licensed software for the educational process, scientific research, innovation activity, management, and audio-visual mechanical means of teaching. In the University there are 119 auditoria, 25 of which are used for lectures and 94 – for practical classes and seminars. Fifty auditoria are equipped with multimedia equipment. There are 20 computer classes and 11 computer-based education centers. Seventeen university laboratories are used for practical lessons. In the University, there are two exhibition halls, three halls of drawing and painting, a lithography studio, a sculpture room, and three sports halls. A single network and thirty local networks function in the University. Books of the scientific and technical library are being registered in the e-catalog of the University.
The University has long-term partnership relations with Moscow state civil engineering university to create an innovative geographically-distributed open network for distance education (an open network of transfer and distribution of professional knowledge in the engineering sphere) using modern telecommunication technologies. The main target of the project is to organize a "Regional center of open network" in SPACE in order to provide education based on modern technologies of distant education using telecommunication means and to develop education programs for training engineering specialists of new generation according to statues of Russian state standards and other normative documents.
The University has an outstanding faculty of approximately 500 professors; 80% of them have different scientific degrees and titles, two academicians of the Russian Academy of Architecture and Constructional Sciences (RAACS), seven corresponding members, and seven councils of the same Academy. Over 400 professors were awarded orders and medals, honorary titles of the Russian Federation, breastplates, and various degree certificates for success in work. Two professors head art groups of scientists of Saint Petersburg and Moscow, which in 2008 were granted awards of the government of the Russian Federation in science and technics in one of the priority spheres.
The University's mission is to develop the traditions of Russian Civil Engineering and a unique architectural environment of Saint Petersburg and the Russian Federation to foster innovative development in Architecture, Civil and Transport Engineering, and social and economic well-being. The mission is accomplished through training skilled and socially active professionals by implementing cutting-edge research methods and educational technologies.
The University prides itself on its collaboration with industry and governmental organizations in the field of of сivil engineering and track record of successful projects which contribute to architecture and town-planning of Saint Petersburg and many other Russian cities. We have developed several strategic partnerships, licensed a wide range of discoveries, and successfully spun out some companies. Together, these turn our research findings into products and processes that benefit the economy and society.
Our researchers collaborate extensively and productively with colleagues from around the globe. The University has about 60 international agreements with universities and centers of excellence in 23 countries and offers double-degree study programs in Civil and Environmental Engineering together with Finnish partner-universities. A degree from Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering opens broad employment perspectives in the engineering field. Our graduates are highly sought-after: of those who graduated in 2016, 80 percent were employed in the field.
