Offering professionals the chance to gain a state-recognized university degree without giving up work or restricting their professional activity has been the objective of FOM University of Applied Sciences since its foundation in 1993.
Alongside professionals from all industry sectors and with varying functions, trainees wishing to combine in-company training with a Bachelor's degree course as part of a dual study program also study at the internationally oriented university. To enable both professionals and trainees to combine study and work optimally, lectures are held in the evenings and weekends. Many courses can also be taken on two days a week during the day.
FOM University of Applied Sciences offers prospective students numerous ways to gain a university degree while continuing to work.
Professionals with a university entrance qualification can take a "traditional" Bachelor's course in seven semesters. Alternatively, professionals with or without a university entrance qualification can gain a Bachelor's degree at the Open Business School department as part of a three-phase model.
Professionals with an initial university degree can obtain their Master's degree, including the internationally renowned MBA, in four semesters.
High school graduates completing in-company training can study at the Dual Studies Department parallel to their training programs.
Professionals from the health and social services sector can study at the Health & Social Management department. For professionals in technical professions, FOM concentrates its engineering courses in the Engineering department.
With more than 42,500 students, FOM is Germany's most prominent private institute of higher education. It has been accredited by the German Council of Science and Humanities, Germany's most important advisory body for science policy. At the beginning of 2012, FOM was also the first private university in Germany to be accredited as an institution by the FIBAA (Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation). This seal of approval from one of the world's most important higher education assessment agencies proves that FOM's quality management satisfies the highest international standards.
The non-profit Stiftung BildungsCentrum der Wirtschaft supports FOM. Experienced lecturers from the academic world and industry give on-site lectures at 29 study centers throughout Germany. FOM University of Applied Sciences is headquartered in Essen. The university is consequently under the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Research of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
FOM sees itself as a complementary addition to the German university landscape. It offers outstanding study programs with appropriate conditions for and attractive to target groups, and it focuses on courses that can be completed. At the same time, students work or undergo vocational training.
Study programs can only be attractive to students and companies if a high standard of teaching and research is guaranteed. The organizational conditions of on-site study are tailored to students' unique needs who work and study simultaneously. This also includes affordable tuition fees.
FOM engages in applied research, emphasizing human resource management, career and education, and skills development in small and medium-sized companies (SMEs). Other areas of research are developed in line with FOM's study programs. Research output is integrated into teaching activities.
FOM ensures that the goals based upon this mission statement are achieved with a comprehensive quality management system that embraces quality planning, quality control, quality assurance, and quality improvement, which guarantees excellent standards in its goals.
FOM is committed to an equality-oriented university culture that nurtures all existing talents and potentials irrespective of sex, age, nationality, religion, and social background.

They guarantee the quality of teaching and research and ensure that the university curricula always correspond to the latest academic findings. Teaching staff develops their didactic skills on an ongoing basis.
The Senate Advisory Board and Friends of FOM ensure that course content is linked to practice. They support the university in an advisory capacity and are composed of high-ranking representatives of industry associations and other enterprises and organizations from all over Germany.
Research and development are of significant importance at the FOM: they do not only occur based on the North Rhine Westphalia law for greater autonomy for higher education institutions (Hochschulfreiheitsgesetz). However, they are also an essential pillar of the guiding principle of the university.
The aims of the university: to further develop scientific training and education, to transfer scientific findings to business practice, and to enable students on a scientific level. The main emphases in terms of content are career- and education research, contributions to competence development in SMEs, taxation law issues, and economic analyses.
The transfer of research- and development results to science and economy is ensured through publications in the FOM or other specialist publishers, through symposia, scientific conferences, and presentations.
