At Virginia Tech, we are reimagining how education and technology intersect. This approach transforms how we teach and learn, perform research, and engage with communities around the world.
Hokies collaborate with diverse team members and cross the traditional lines between fields and disciplines to tackle global-scale problems.
We push the boundaries of knowledge in order to make a difference in the world. Members of the Hokie Nation have a clear vision of how we can serve our personal, professional, and civic pursuits.
Founded in 1872, Virginia Tech pushes knowledge boundaries by taking a hands-on, transdisciplinary approach to preparing students to be leaders and problem-solvers.
As the commonwealth's most comprehensive university and its leading research institution, Virginia Tech offers about 280 undergraduate and graduate degree programs to more than 34,000 students and manages a more than $521 million research portfolio. The university fulfills its role as a land-grant institution by fostering a collaborative environment that integrates technology into all disciplines so that the Virginia Tech community can serve as a force for positive change around the commonwealth, the country, and the world.
Through experiential learning, future-focused research, and inclusive, spirited culture, Virginia Tech strives to accomplish the charge of its motto Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).
Virginia Tech has a 2,600-acre main campus, educational and research facilities across the state, a study-abroad site in Switzerland, and a 1,800-acre agriculture research farm near the main campus. The campus proper is located in Blacksburg in Montgomery County in the New River Valley and is 38 miles southwest of Roanoke.
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is a public land-grant university serving the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world community. The discovery and dissemination of new knowledge are central to its mission. Through its focus on teaching and learning, research and discovery, and outreach and engagement, the university creates, conveys, and applies knowledge to expand personal growth and opportunity, advance social and community development, foster economic competitiveness, and improve life quality.
Virginia Tech offers hundreds of programs for every level of learning — from certifications to doctoral degrees. You (and your future employers) also expect a university learning environment to go far beyond mastering a single discipline or major, and that is what Virginia Tech provides. We will help you gain knowledge in at least one discipline while also creating opportunities to build communications, critical thinking, design thinking, teamwork, and analysis.
Virginia Tech will equip you to apply the skills and knowledge you acquire through real-world experiences — giving you an education you will remember for a lifetime.
As a student, you will spend only a portion of your time in the classroom. But all of your time at Virginia Tech will be spent in an environment that promotes learning and growing.
Our campus life aims to complement our world-class academic experience by building communities, promoting holistic education, and cultivating environments that offer leadership, innovation, and service opportunities. Here, you will find a dynamic residential campus and award-winning dining in an environment committed to well-being. From our health and wellness programs to our hundreds of student organizations and clubs, life at Virginia Tech transforms students into the Hokies, who will change our world for the better.
Adopted in 1896, the university motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve), has long pointed to true north for Hokies. Hokies leave Virginia Tech with far more than an academic degree. Students and alumni embrace service as a way of life: They engage with others in the community, knowing that global leaders and valuable citizens must serve others in their daily lives. Service has become Virginia Tech's most important tradition.
VT Engage is a service-learning and civic engagement center in Student Affairs that inspires students to think more critically about themselves and the social issues they encounter. Students lead and learn by collaborating directly with the university's communities — not just once, but over time.
Virginia Tech's Outreach and International Affairs supports the university's engagement mission by creating community partnerships and projects, offering professional development programs and technical assistance, and building collaborations to enrich discovery and learning — all with the overarching goal of improving the quality of life for people within the commonwealth and throughout the world. Outreach and International Affairs guide Virginia Tech's global presence. Its regional research and professional development and development centers across the commonwealth focus on graduate education and professional development. Blacksburg-based centers are dedicated to engagement, language, culture, and economic development.
On October 1, 1872, Addison "Add" Caldwell walked 26 miles from Craig County to enroll as the first student at Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. Ever since then, Virginia Tech has been fulfilling its role as a leading land-grant university. The tiny college, initially housed in the old Olin and Preston Institute near what is now Alumni Mall, has grown into a world-class university.
Discover Virginia Tech's rich history and traditions through our heritage as a leading university from 1872 to the present.
