Research funding has directly contributed to UTHSC's long record of necessary science accomplishments, applied clinical and translational research, and public health, allowing us to continue our contributions to the health of the Memphis-area community.
Through collaborative relationships with health care partnerships like St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, we are well-positioned to pave the way for innovative patient-centered research and development with a clinical and translational focus.
The University of Tennessee Health Science Center's Memphis campus comprises six colleges – Allied Health Sciences, Dentistry, Graduate Health Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy. Clinically, UTHSC faculty practice groups contribute more than $300 million annually to the statewide mission. These practice groups serve as the core faculty for all of our partner teaching hospitals.
The University of Tennessee Health Science Center recognizes the value of having an inclusive environment in which individuals from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds, races and ethnicities, physical and mental abilities, ages, creeds, cultures, and prior work/life experiences can learn and work together in an environment that values differences. To foster this environment, UTHSC has developed a series of guidelines for selecting students for its academic programs.
Diversity provides essential benefits for the educational enterprise, enriching experiences in the classroom and clinical settings and facilitating students' preparation for the different types of environments they may be asked to serve – rural/ urban, affluent/underserved multi-cultural/traditional, etc. Thus, the campus actively encourages applications from individuals who bring unique perspectives to its programs. Admission criteria for academic programs will continue to emphasize academic excellence. However, additional non-academic factors will also be considered and some additional consideration given to applications from qualified individuals from groups that are underrepresented in the health care professions or from counties in Tennessee that are traditionally underserved by the health care professions, from veterans, from other non-traditional students and from students who represent the first in their families to pursue higher education.
UTHSC holds a yearly Campus Food Drive and United Way Campaign to help others and strengthen our community. Health Career Programs (HCP) prepares the next generation of individuals to become culturally competent and relevant healthcare professionals and educators.
The Clinica Esperanza is a primary care clinic run by UTHSC College of Medicine students, residents, and faculty that offers free services to underserved, uninsured Latino adults. The Rachel Kay Stevens Therapy Center is a student-run pro bono clinic founded to serve the underinsured or uninsured children of the Mid-South from birth to 18 years.
In 1911, the University of Tennessee launched its Memphis campus, dedicating it solely to health science education and research. Seed programs in medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy quickly flourished, and within a few short years, new programs were initiated in health professions, graduate health sciences, and nursing. Each of those programs grew to become a college in its own right.
In 1963, the UT Graduate School of Medicine in Knoxville, based at the UT Medical Center, became part of the UT Health Science Center. In 1974, the UT College of Medicine in Chattanooga, based at Erlanger Health System, joined the UTHSC System. In 2014, Saint Thomas Health in Nashville began collaborating with UTHSC to create a Nashville campus.
