It is the first technical higher educational institution in Transbaikalia, the first University in the Republic of Buryatia. UTM today is the largest scientific and educational complex in the East of the country, ranking high in Russia's higher school system. UTM Is a multi educational center that realizes more than 80 basic licensed educational programs on full-time and part-time study modes. UTM can continue education in the master programs within two years after termination of training in the bachelor program. UTM realizes a principle of continuing education and expands the possibility of optimizing an educational trajectory by experts and students of 4-5 years of study. They are trained under the reduced form of education and get a second higher education diploma at the regional institute of professional training. UTM prepares scientific and teaching personnel in postgraduate study in 11 licensed scientific specialties, certification of science officers in 6 specialized councils of the University. UTM is a many thousand armies of the most active youth (about 10 thousand students are trained at the full-time and part-time courses) and a progressive part of the population with different purposefulness, persistence, creative thinking, enthusiasm.
UTM has trained more than 50 thousand experts with higher vocational training based on the industrial and economic management of the enterprises, establishments, and organizations in Siberia and the Far East, and other regions of Russia. UTM consists of 4 institutes and ten faculties that organize methodical, research, industrial and educational activity with students and postgraduate students on all higher vocational training, forms, and training technologies. UTM possesses ten training, research, and production complexes (2 - carrying out the industrial activity, 8 - rendering services).
The University develops the abilities and interests of students. At the University, numerous sections of student's Center of science, sports club section, collectives of the student's Center of culture promote disclosing and display research, sports and creative abilities, organization of useful and productive leisure of students, experience acquisition to the subsequent professional work. Sixteen educational buildings of ESSUTM secure educational process. Some of them have been constructed and placed in operation over the last five years: 2 specialized floor building of the chair "Plane and helicopter building" with the conventional flying machines (АN-24, МI-2, МI-8) unique in the republic a bench hall for carrying out of scientific researches, diagnostics and tests of elements, units and knots of cars the industrial building of the chair «Metallurgical science and technology of processing of materials» for carrying out of researches of metals and alloys, including use of nanotechnologies the 5-floor building with several 2 level lecture halls of type "amphitheater." All educational and scientific laboratories are equipped with modern technological and test equipment, devices, computers, office equipment, multimedia, etc.
UTM incorporates the Buryat republican center of new information technology of ESSUTM, the Buryat representation of the Center of testing of the Russian Federation at ESSUTM, the Buryat Republican Center of Internet Education, the Regional Resource Center of education information, the Regional Center of pedagogical audit, and also a popular virtual reading room with access to a dissertational fund of the Russian state library and funds of the Congress of the USA library. UTM uses modern information technology based on more than 1000 personal computers of last versions, 40 display classes connected to the Internet. UTM develops fundamental sciences on chairs and in the research sector, the education, research, and production sector, in the research laboratories and centers, in the intellectual property department in the department of metrology and standardization with the laboratory of instrumentations.
The university science is closely connected with industry, resulting in much research for serial implementation. The most considerable scientific researches are: production of the liquid bacteria concentrated product of bifid bacteria (Doctor of Sciences in Engineering, Professor Khamagaeva I.S), ecologically clean medical prophylactic grain products based on the Tibetan medicine recommendations (Candidate of Sciences in Engineering Ayusheeva A.G), sheepskin processing by using new technologies (Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Dumnov V.S) and others. All these researches are used in different fields of economy. Postgraduate courses of the ESSUT and other educational institutions help provide the University with highly qualified professional teaching and scientific staff. There are 198 postgraduate students of 28 majors at the University, 192 theses for the degree of Candidate of Sciences in Engineering, and 30 theses for the Doctorate of Sciences in Engineering have been defended for the last five years.
