At NTNU, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, we create knowledge for a better world and solutions that can change everyday life. NTNU is a university with an international focus, with headquarters in Trondheim and campuses in Ålesund and Gjøvik. NTNU has a prominent profile in science and technology, various professional study programs, and excellent academic breadth that also includes the humanities, social sciences, economics, medicine, health sciences, educational science, architecture, entrepreneurship, art disciplines, and artistic activities. NTNU has four strategic research areas in 2014–2023: sustainability, energy, oceans, and health. NTNU has offices in Japan and Brussels (together with the University of Bergen and SINTEF).
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is the largest in Norway today, dating back to 1910. A tradition is going back to 1767 and the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences Letters (DKNVS). NTNU's social mission is to create knowledge for a better world and deliver solutions that can change and improve everyday life.
NTNU has the primary responsibility for higher education in technology in Norway and is the country's premier institution for engineers' education. The university offers several professional study programs and a broad academic curriculum in the natural sciences, social sciences, teacher education, humanities, medicine, health sciences, economics, finance, administration, architecture, and the arts.
Research forms part of the activities through a variety of projects and programs in addition to specialized centers. NTNU's strategic commitment to three enabling technologies in 2011–2020 include biotechnology, ICT, and nanotechnology. Enabling technologies involve interdisciplinary basic research that contributes to developing new industries, products, and solutions in most society sectors.
Knowledge provides people with opportunities and influence, as well as a foundation for making wise choices. Knowledge inspires and challenges. It changes attitudes, mindsets, and how we perceive the world around us. Informed debate strengthens our democracy. NTNU's activities should benefit society as a whole, and society can trust that our findings comply with the best scientific practice.
Knowledge and technology development creates opportunities for increasing sustainable value creation and finding answers to significant challenges. Through the United Nations, the world has agreed on 17 Sustainable Development Goals. NTNU will contribute actively towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
NTNU's strength is our main profile in science and technology combined with academic breadth and interdisciplinarity. NTNU's values serve as a guide for all staff and students, and our behavior reflects these values. Our work is founded on four values: to be creative, critical, constructive, and respectful.
Academic freedom is the basis for our activities. We take on challenging questions and tasks and seek innovative solutions based on our academic breadth. NTNU supports the development of disciplines, people, and cultures. We value and encourage innovation among students and staff and innovative teaching, research, and artistic activities.
Our activities build on fundamental democratic values, and we represent an unprejudiced and independent voice. Our academic culture's hallmarks are debate, critical reflection, fact-based knowledge, impartiality, and high ethical awareness. We challenge conventional ideas and solutions.
We engage in an open and solution-oriented dialogue with the outside world and emphasize external and internal collaboration. We take social responsibility, influence, correct, and develop each other and our environment through dialogue and dissemination of knowledge. NTNU places emphasis on co-determination and active involvement by students and employees.
Every employee and student has a responsibility to contribute to a work and study environment characterized by respect and consideration. We facilitate personal growth and development of skills. We contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in society and our activities. We promote equality and tolerance. At NTNU, we show respect for varying attitudes and opinions.
Our mission covers both the expectations that the world around us has of NTNU and the challenges we want to solve. We have a general mission, similar to other universities, and a specific mission, which makes us unique.
As a university, NTNU has a responsibility to nurture basic research with a long-term horizon and educate outstanding students. We offer research-based education at all levels. We develop and disseminate knowledge and manage expertise in nature, people, society, and technology. NTNU promotes and disseminates culture and contributes to innovation in society, business, and public administration.
NTNU is a broad-based university with a prominent science and technology profile and focuses on professional study programs.
We contribute to Norway's development. We create value – economic, cultural, and social – and have a national role in developing the technological foundation for tomorrow's society.
