Establishing a catholic university in Indonesia was proposed at a meeting between bishops of Java held in Jakarta on 1st June 1952. To respond to this idea, the Atma Jaya Foundation was formed by a group of young Catholic intellectuals on 1st June 1960. This foundation established a catholic university named Universitas Katolik Indonesia Atma Jaya (Atma Jaya Catholic University). Among these young catholic intellectuals were: Ir. J.P.Cho, Drs. Lo Siang Hien-Ginting, Drs. Goei Tjong Tik, I.J. Kasimo, J.B. Legiman S.H., Drs. F.X. Seda, Dr. Pang Lay Kim, Ir. Tan Bian Seng, Dr. Anton Moeliono, St. Munadjat Danusaputro S.H., Drs. J.F. Tan, and Drs. Ben Mang-Reng Say.

In its early years, Unika Atma Jaya was supported by the Ursuline Sisters. They kindly lent the University their classrooms in the Ursuline school complex on Jalan Lapangan Banteng Utara and Santa Theresia complex in Menteng. Since 1967, Atma Jaya has gradually occupied a permanent campus on the Jalan Sudirman campus, known as the Semanggi Campus. The Faculty of Medicine, the Atma Jaya hospital, and the Atma Jaya funeral home occupy the Pluit Campus in North Jakarta.

The phrase "Atma Jaya" means a glorious (victorious/prosperous) spirit. A glorious spirit always encourages to increase the quality of education. The academic excellence and professional graduates are the eminent orientation.

The University's vision is to be a leading university with academic and professional excellence at the international and national level, which consistently expresses the combination between the Christian Faith, science, technology, and the Indonesian culture to develop the people's minds.

The University carries out the following missions:

    • To implement an academic and professional education to develop science, professionalism, and characteristics of the students.
    • To carry out necessary and applied research to advance science, technology, and art and culture (IPTEKS) To volunteer its expertise in IPTEKS to benefit society.
    • To manage the University effectively and efficiently in an ethical and prestigious academic atmosphere.

"For God and the Country," said the founders of Atma Jaya when stating their identity. After its establishment half a century ago, the whole civitas academica of Atma Jaya always strives to contextualize the spirits brought by the founders into contemporary development. In the commemoration of Lustrum XI in 2015, the big theme "Growing together with the Nation" was put forward. The choice for this theme again emphasizes that Atma Jaya and the nation's growth are separable because this is the most important reason. Raison d'etre.

This 2015-2019 period is essential for the Atma Jaya community because the BSD campus will begin its operation. Therefore, Unika Atma Jaya now has three campuses: Semanggi, Pluit, and BSD Campus. In its Long-term Development Plan in 2015-2029, the three Atma Jaya campuses will have their unique services to the nation:

The Semanggi Campus will become the Center for Nation Development.

    • BSD Campus will become the Center for Human Development.
    • The Pluit Campus, which consists of the Faculty of Medicine and Atma Jaya Teaching Hospital, will be dedicated to becoming the Center for Health Development.

At the moment, Unika Atma Jaya has 18 Sarjana (Bachelor’s Degree) programs, 8 Magister (Master’s Degree) Programs, 2 Professional Programs and 1 Doctoral Program. In research, there are 4 Research Centers and 1 Community Empowerment Center under the coordination of Research and Community Service Institution (Lembaga Penelitian dan Pengabdian Masyarakat/LPPM). The four research centers are HIV-AIDS Research Center (Pusat Penelitian HIV-AIDS/PPH), Center of Community Development Study (Pusat Kajian Pembangunan Masyarakat/PKPM), Center of Language and Culture (Pusat Kajian Budaya dan Bahasa/PKBB) and Center of Ethical Development (Pusat Pengembangan Etika/PPE). In Pluit, we have the Health Research Center (Pusat Penelitian Kesehatan /Puslitkes) while the Community Service Center (Pusat Pengabdian Masyarakat/PPM) is a medium for cross faculties community service activities. Aside from that, Atma Jaya also has Applied Science Affiliation Institution (Lembaga Afiliasi Ilmu Terapan/LAIT) which coordinates various activities such as language courses (Center of Language Teaching), publishing, etc.

In the future, Semanggi Campus will become the center for Magister/Master's Degree programs, courses, certifications, and other non-degree programs, aside from becoming the center for academic or applied research activities. Semanggi Campus will be the "integrator" for Business-Government – Community. The Pluit Campus has a long history of conducting various programs, a joint program with the DKI City Government. Programs such as Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) in several places in Jakarta are a synergy among campus, industry, government, and the community.

Aside from the national issues, the founders give their undivided attention to the marginal groups. As a part of the Catholic Higher Education institution, Atma Jaya implements the principle of Preferential Option for the Poor. The spirit of building the nation based on the principle of caring for the nation is translated into the Entrepreneurial and Social-Oriented University. In the 2015-2019 period, we have three pillars of main work programs, which are: to improve the Academic Reputation, to accelerate Organizational Transformation and also, to increase Social Awareness. Through systematic and continuous efforts, we firmly believe that Unika Atma Jaya will become one of Indonesia's reference universities.
