- The first English Medium High School on the Goldfields opened on 23 January 1957, with 235 pupils enrolled. The school, consisting of prefab classrooms, was situated where Goudveld Hoerskool now stands. The Welkom airfield was behind the school and the whole area was gravel and dust. The staff included Mr. J van Huysteen, Acting Principal, and 15 educators. Physical education comprised being issued with a spade and pick and leveling the dustbowl into a sports field! By the beginning of 1960, the roll stood at 306 learners with classes ranging from Grade 8 to 12. The school has 34 classrooms of which 15 will be completely interactive by the end of 2011. The school has a library and an audio-visual room. There is three life science-, three physical science-, two computers -, one civil technology- and one consumer studies laboratory. The school has a gym hall and an assembly hall. The school has two soccer fields, one rugby field, three grass hockey fields, a cricket oval with a five-pitch strip, five cricket practice nets (one indoor, two synthetics, and two grass pitches under construction), a grass athletics track, four netball courts, two tennis courts, and two outdoor basketball courts. The school has an independent tuck shop as well as a uniform shop on its premises. It also has a boarding facility, the Eddie East Hostel that accommodates 40 girls and 40 boys. The school lets two houses to educators as well as several flats in the hostel The grade evenings are the responsibility of the Grade Head, the registered educators of a specific grade, as well as the RCL members of the grade. Grade evenings have three purposes. Firstly, they serve to communicate general information. Secondly, they provide an opportunity for educators to meet with parents of learners who have academic problems, and, thirdly, they provide an opportunity for educators can meet with parents of learners who have disciplinary problems. Every term, reports of under-achieving learners and those with discipline problems will be retained. In some cases, parents can collect these at the grade evening. All subject educators will be present in the evening and have the relevant assessment records with them to discuss the learner’s problems with his/her parent/guardian. The venue is the school hall so that parents can meet with educators conveniently and expeditiously. The uniform shop is operated every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:00 p.m. Mrs. Brummer is responsible for the uniform shop. The shop stocks all school uniform attire for boy- and girl learners, except white school shirts. The shop also buys and sells second-hand clothes that are in good condition. View full school
