At Wayland, students engage in a wide range of hands-on learning opportunities. Whether it is an internship, research, professional project, study or service abroad, or all of the above, experiential learning activities will help you build valuable knowledge and skills as well as your resume. Wayland's Honors program, offered only on the Plainview campus, represents the highest academic work level at the undergraduate level. To graduate from the Honors program, students will take a series of non-traditional, inter-disciplinary seminar classes with various topics. These honors courses add dimension to any bachelor's degree, taking a general education experience and enriching it with a more powerful, broader understanding at the liberal-arts level. During the latter half of the program, students conduct research and write an original honors thesis, with the help and supervision of a faculty member, which they then defend before a panel before graduation. Wayland offers and accepts many financial aid types, including the Federal Pell Grant, the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Perkins Loans, Stafford Loans, Military Tuition Assistance, and V.A. Educational Benefits. To qualify for aid, students must be officially admitted into the university and, with limited exceptions, enrolled as a regular student in an eligible program to receive financial aid. A regular student is enrolled in a degree-seeking program or a certificate program offered by the university. Eligibility for some financial aid is further dependent upon a student's full-time enrollment. Student Services offers a wide range of support programs to enrich your student experience and help you reach your full potential. Here, you will find a calendar filled with concerts, plays, movie nights, game nights, club events – plus campus favorites like Star-Stage and Mississippi Mud Mash! Good friends, good fun – this is what college should be! Koinonia, Wayland's new-student orientation, is the first event of the new school year full of fun and informational activities for students and parents. A scholarship is an award of financial aid for students to further their education. Wayland Baptist University is fortunate to have many endowed scholarships provided by donors, churches, alumni, and organizations loyal to Wayland. With educational costs rising nationwide, many parents and prospective students believe private education is beyond reach. We strive to help our students receive the maximum aid available to them. We offer endowed scholarships based on a student's major field of study, residency, academics, or other specified criteria. We match students with scholarships to help them attain their educational goals. Our primary goal in offering students financial aid is to help students attain their educational goals, whatever they may be. College tuition and fees quickly add up, and unfortunately, sometimes scholarships and grants do not cover everything. Wayland Baptist University supports a few payment alternatives to help cover higher education costs with student loan programs. At the turn of the 20th century, pioneer physician Dr. James Henry Wayland understood the importance of education and was driven to offer an education grounded in faith to the people of West Texas. In an agreement with the Staked Plains Baptist Association and the people of Plainview, Dr. and Mrs. Wayland donated $10,000 and 25 acres of prime real estate to establish the Wayland Literary and Technical Institute that was officially chartered in 1908. The first classes were held in September of 1910 in Matador Hall, with 241 students enrolled in what was now called Wayland Baptist College. In 1911, Elmer Childress was the first student to graduate officially. By 1914, Wayland had become one of the correlated schools affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas. Wayland continues to operate campuses and offer degrees in six states and the African nation of Kenya and online. Wayland Academy is a coeducational college-preparatory boarding and day school located in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. At Wayland, we prepare our students for higher education rigors through a challenging, robust curriculum and a strong emphasis on personal responsibility and diligence. Wayland attracts students from all over the United States and 32 different countries. Our students benefit from the unique experience that only a boarding school can provide. Students are always actively engaged while on campus, both through their academic work and their involvement in Wayland's numerous extra-curricular activities. Wayland Academy prepares each student for college and beyond through a liberal arts curriculum and campus programs devoted to the pursuit of knowledge and character development. Since 1855, Wayland Academy has been dedicated solely to the education of young people. The Academy's curriculum, seen in its broadest sense, encompasses time-tested activities that prepare students to be successful beyond their high school years and lead meaningful lives. The four Corinthian pillars of Wayland Hall symbolize the four pillars of a Wayland education: Scholarship, Faith, Health, and Service. The Academy recognizes these components as essential to developing well-rounded individuals. The first pillar grounds the student in traditional college preparation in English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, History, Modern and Classical Languages, and the Fine Arts. The second pillar reinforces the ethical, moral, and spiritual awareness of students in their daily lives. The chapel is held every Friday and is a non-denominational service with community building as its core purpose. The third pillar strengthens students' emotional and physical well-being through participation on athletic teams or in the Alternate Activities Program (AAP) and through policies designed to encourage healthy lifestyles. The fourth pillar upholds our belief in the importance of student awareness of social obligations, both in our community and worldwide. Wayland's comprehensive writing initiative incorporates every subject. The milestones of this program are a Capstone Project and Senior Thesis that require undergraduate-level work. Our students move on to college and the world prepared to write well, no matter what field they pursue. While our college acceptance list is healthy, we use the word fit to describe college selection. Wayland students in every grade work with our college counselors to prepare for the college admission process. Our students graduate to a college or university that meets their academic goals and pursuits outside of class. The Wayland community is socioeconomically diverse and home to 185 students of 32 different nationalities. Our graduates leave with an international perspective that helps prepare them for college and the global economy beyond. Wayland extracurriculars, including drama, fine arts, clubs, and athletics, promote excellence and participation. Our students have opportunities to take risks and try new activities or further hone talents in areas where they are more experienced. Most students are varied in their pursuits, which leads them to confidence and a broad range of experiences when they leave us. Our community never typecasts a student as just an athlete or just a musician. Academic integrity, a challenging curriculum, and a faculty dedicated to cultivating a passion for knowledge are integral components of a Wayland education. Small classes allow teachers to interact with students as individuals, hone their strengths, and prepare them to excel in college. Wayland's faculty members work closely with students in every aspect of campus life. Most faculty live on campus and serve as mentors, coaches, and residence hall supervisors. They have open office hours, study sessions and are devoted to helping students reach their academic and personal potential. Wayland is a welcoming, safe community where students can indeed be themselves. Strong faculty/student relationships, regular seated meals, small class sizes, residence hall communities, and plenty of one-on-one attention help students think of the community as their "Wayland family." Students and faculty members trust and care about one another since they interact in the classroom, in the residence hall, in athletics, and student organizations. Students gain leadership skills through student government, Student Activities Board, Prefect and Proctor positions, and various other fun and educational opportunities. Wayland's mentoring program ensures that every student has close contact with a faculty member. Students are taught the value of giving back to their community through the Life Skills program, the Day of Caring, and other service opportunities.
