Effective strategies include: High-quality teaching and learning address the needs of all children with effective differentiation to challenge all pupils. 1 to 1 and small group support by experienced teaching/support staff focused on closing gaps in learning for children working towards achieving age-related expectations as well as those aiming to exceed this. High-quality feedback to pupils to address misconceptions, reshape learning and establish clear next steps. A focus on the development of personal and social skills. Additional teaching and learning opportunities are provided by Warren Road staff or external agencies. We recognize that high-quality class teaching has the biggest impact on pupils’ learning and their achievement. Class teachers are fully informed about the needs of the pupils in their class and differentiate learning accordingly and have the highest expectations of all pupils. We aim to close any gaps in pupils’ learning as early as possible and for this reason, we will direct support into Early Years and KS1 with a focus on pupils’ Communication and Language Development. Warren Junior Teaching School is an outstanding school offering teacher training positions for Primary and Special by providing high-quality training for teachers of the future through School Direct. Placements can be at any of the Strategic Partner schools within the alliance, including the outstanding Trinity Special School. The School Direct training program is open to both top graduates and career changers. It offers talented individuals the chance to be part of a teaching team from day one by combining teacher training with on-the-job learning. The support and guidance were given to all trainees to ensure that the placements are successful and work in harmony with the university. Trainees are based in their ‘host school’ for the year with a second placement of up to six weeks in a contrasting age range during the spring term. All mentors are experienced teachers and senior leaders. The school ensures that all children have full access to the curriculum by making explicit, through year group and individual teacher planning, the essential differentiation that ensures that children with special educational needs are working on the same curriculum. Children with SEN are supported in small groups and on a one-to-one basis within the classroom, or withdrawn to another room according to the type of work undertaken and the suitability of the location for the planned activity. Children who have a statement are supported in the classroom or withdrawn to ensure that their IEP is implemented in the most effective and least intrusive manner. There is a governor-appointed SEN Link Governor. The SENCo and SEN Link Governor will meet annually to discuss any current SEN-related issues. Other meetings may be held as and when necessary. The Governors are regularly updated and an annual report is made to parents. The SEN policy is available to parents. There is a code of practice available to all staff and parents. Our curriculum is designed to provide all students with the opportunity to make progress and attain their very best. Students begin this journey in our second phase and continue within the Sixth Form. Our Secondary Phase curriculum has a traditional framework, with a particular emphasis on preparing for success in the twenty-first century. The Warren students experience a balance of the traditional core subjects of English, Maths, and Science alongside a range of other subjects through to subjects that support student achievement. We have introduced an innovative curriculum that allows our students to smash their year group’s learning barriers and take examinations when they can. We are always looking at innovative ways of enabling our students to secure their very best achievement. All students follow the National Curriculum and all are expected to take GCSEs in those subjects as well as a wide choice of optional courses made at the end of Year 9. In the Sixth Form, this breadth and depth of curriculum provision are extended further through a wide range of opportunities in courses from level 1 to A2. As a school, we gained an excellent reputation for our specialist status as a Sports and Engineering College and work closely with the Loxford Trust in all areas. Our students still benefit from the expertise we have within these subject areas. However that does not mean we value just those subjects – we understand the need for excellence in all subjects, and we also recognize the vast range of opportunities in many aspects of technology, the arts, and business – using our students’ strengths of communication, problem-solving and team-work. There is, however, far more to education than what goes on in the formal classroom. To this end, a part of our student’s time at this school is given over to activities outside the classroom.
