Truro School Chapel is a quiet space within busy school life, providing a sanctuary for reflection and thought. On the one hand, the Chapel reminds the community of its history and its Methodist roots. The Foundation Stone was laid on the 8th June 1927 by the Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall. The memorial plaques from the First and Second World Wars and Boer War honor those who fell during those conflicts. On the other hand, the Chapel also provides opportunities for spiritual expression through music. A magnificent new organ has recently been installed, alongside a Steinway Grand piano. We asked our parents to choose any three words to describe a typical student. The most popular choices were Happy, Confident, and Polite and we firmly believe that this is a direct result of watching their daughters grow up in an environment where every girl matters and every girl is supported and challenged to become the very best that she can be. Being a smaller school allows us to provide truly bespoke development for your daughter’s skills, exceptional academic support, and first-class teaching in focussed classes that enable girls to follow their curiosity way beyond the syllabus. Just over 300 girls, aged 4 to 18, are part of our school community on a daily, weekly or Flexi boarding basis. Within our halls, they flourish into confident, resilient, and articulate young adults, ready to embrace the challenge of life beyond school with enthusiasm. From the age of four, our girls are encouraged to find their voices, to grow in confidence, and to develop the resilience needed to try, to overcome obstacles, to re-group, and bounce back. Yoga classes and a wellbeing hub run alongside a full mental health awareness program that includes a Big Sis/Little Sis buddy system, peer mentoring and weekly workshops on topics including healthy eating, anti-bullying and positive body image. Mindfulness sessions are run during exam weeks while, every week, girls as young as four take part in ‘relaxercise’ classes covering meditation and cosmic yoga. At the upper end of the school, students from Years 11-13 can even qualify for Mental Health First Aid. We are the first school in the South West, and the second in the UK, to use the new wellbeing platform ‘Flourishing at School’ which enables our pupils to understand and maintain positive mental health. The program is based on leading psychologist Martin Seligman’s work on PERMA (Positive emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Accomplishments) and has already proven incredibly successful in Australia. Rather than seeking to identify those who are distressed, or potentially “at-risk”, this innovative program takes this positive psychology approach to help students develop the ‘pillars’ of good mental health to stay well and optimize quality of life. Through surveys and regular check-ins, it aims to identify top contributors to each girl’s wellbeing. The results will inform each student’s individualized pastoral care plan as well as conversations between girls and their tutors focussed on the development of wellbeing knowledge and behaviors. Truro and Penwith College is one of the best colleges in the country, a fact recognized by Ofsted, which gave us Outstanding status following our review in February 2016. The College you see today was formed in 2008 when Truro College merged with Penwith College in Penzance. Truro College opened in 1993 to provide education and training to the city and its surrounding areas. Soon, these 'surrounding areas' expanded to encompass most of Cornwall, as increasing numbers of students were attracted by our reputation and results. From an initial 2,770 students in 1993, learner numbers increased to around 13,900 students in 2008. Before the merger, Penwith College was a small tertiary college serving the area from Land's End to Hayle and Camborne. In 2006, Penwith should be merged with Truro College, a process completed in 2008. In the five years that followed, £30million was spent on redeveloping the site, student numbers more than doubled, and results across all levels rose dramatically to match those of Truro College. Truro and Penwith College now offers many courses across many qualification types and levels, from traditionally 'academic' A Levels and Degrees to Apprenticeships, vocational courses, and business training. Our students' happiness shows in their results, which place us in the top 4% of colleges in England. Our Academies, focusing on a range of specialisms from medical and academic to surfing and tennis, provide learners with an outlet for their talents outside formal studies. We have even got two public restaurants, offering top-quality food prepared by our cookery students.
