      1. Welcome to FHNW University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland. FHNW University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern is one of Switzerland's leading universities of applied sciences and arts, actively involved in teaching, research, continuing education, and service provision – both innovative and practice-oriented. Its broad range of degree programs, hands-on concept, innovative, application-oriented research, and global network make FHNW a diversified and appealing educational institution, a sought-after partner to industry, and an attractive employer in northwestern Switzerland. In fulfilling its fourfold mandate – education/training, continuing education, applied research and development, and services to third parties – the FHNW puts quality and focuses on the future front and center. One central concern is graduates' success in the employment market. Therefore, the FHNW always keeps the social context in mind in its teaching and research. Particular focus is placed on interdisciplinarily addressing major social issues and challenges, such as the aging society, the turnaround in energy policy, and the consequences of the digital revolution. The nine schools of the FHNW cover a broad spectrum of subjects and enable diverse, interdisciplinary research. The lecturer's and researchers' skills, the excellent infrastructure, and the regional, national, and international networks of the FHNW offer excellent conditions for addressing myriad issues from the worlds of science, business, politics, culture, and society. People from more than 60 countries work and study at the FHNW. The FHNW benefits from this diversity and prepares its students for the challenges posed by a globalized economy and society. The FHNW's international activity includes partnerships with international universities and institutions, European research programs, and offering tri-national and multi-language degree programs. The FHNW is owned by the four operating cantons Aargau, Basel-Landschaft, Basel-Stadt, and Solothurn. These each govern the FHNW with a three-year mandate. The interfaces between the FHNW and the operators are the Interparliamentary Commission (IPK) and the Government Committee, consisting of the four Directors of Education of the operating cantons. We will help you in your continuing education as a professional in the school and university system. The central topics are teaching professional roles and quality development. Our products and services in continuing education support teachers, principals, school authorities, and educational practitioners to broaden and deepen their professional skills. FHNW provides a well-founded, diverse, and individual range of continuing education programs. Our continuing education courses offer an effective combination of practical relevance and theoretical foundation and targeted incorporation of the latest national and international research outcomes. FHNW University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland tackles our time's challenges and makes essential contributions towards future-oriented solutions. The FHNW aims to demonstrate this in four current thematic fields: The population is getting ever older, there is a shortage of skilled scientific and technical workers, a sustainable approach to energy is essential, and the economy's competitiveness must be strengthened. Several schools are collaborating in each of the four Strategic Initiatives on these topics to promote interdisciplinary collaboration at the FHNW. Following the mandate of the operating cantons, the FHNW plays a "driver of innovation for society and business". Strategic Initiatives are expressly seen as an instrument in this mandate. The University Board approved the following four initiatives at the beginning of 2015. They are due for completion at the end of 2017. Alumni and graduates of the FHNW are organized into independent alumni groups by the school. Alumni FHNW is the umbrella for the alumni associations. The alumni associations help to make sure that contact with former fellow students is maintained. Promoting networking among their alumni is the primary objective of the alumni associations. Also, the alumni associations at the schools offer many advantages, for example, subject-specific or interdisciplinary events, outings and interesting guided tours, get-togethers with former fellow students and colleagues, and also tips and tricks for entering the world of work, lots of discounts and a wide variety of other offers. As an umbrella organization, Alumni FHNW forms the interface between the alumni organizations and the FHNW, industry, teaching, and research. With unique services, continuing education discounts, and networking events, Alumni FHNW adds value for the associations and the individual alumni. Most alumni associations are members of Alumni FHNW.
