Siauliai University is the most prominent University in Northern Lithuania and belongs to regional and classical types. The University was founded in 1997 after the merger of Šiauliai Pedagogical Institute and Šiauliai Polytechnic Faculty of Kaunas University of Technology. Studies are divided into three primary cycles: first cycle – Bachelor's degree, second cycle – Special Professional studies and Master's degree studies, third cycle – Doctoral studies. 59 Study Programmes (34 Bachelor's and 25 Master's). 24 International Study Programmes conducted in English or Russian: Bachelor's: Public Administration, Economics and Sustainable Business (Joint degree study program with Wroclaw University (Poland)), Ecology and Environmental Studies, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Informatics, Mathematics, Music, Environmental Objects Design. Master's: Social Work (Joint Study Programme with Open University, Ukraine), Signal Processing, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Arts (Design, Graphics, Painting, Textile/Leather), Pedagogy of Music, History, and Politics, Literary Criticism, Intercultural Education and Mediation, Career Education, Nature Recreation (Joint study Programme with Daugavpils University, Latvia), Management, Economics (Specialisations: Economics Analysis and Planning Finances and Banking), Regional Development and Governance (Joint degree study program with University of Pardubice, Czech Republic). Every faculty of Šiauliai University offers one year program for incoming ERASMUS+ students and students from partner institutions http://www.su.lt/en/studies/exchange-programmes2. The University operates the following research centers: Gender Studies, Biological Research, Educational Researches, Energy and Environmentally Clean Technologies, Modelling of Physical Processes, Natural Science Education, Public Health, Social Research, Special Education, Technological Experiments, Biomedical Engineering, Art. There is a European Studies Institute at the University as well. The researchers and the staff are running and have participated in such international projects as VI and VII Framework, ERASMUS+, EUREKA, EQUAL, INTERREG, LAT-LIT, EU Structural Funds, and other EC projects. Šiauliai University has over 130 agreements with foreign higher education institutions from 40 countries all over the World. University successfully participates in various ERASMUS+ programs: exchange of students and lecturers, ECTS adjustment, intensive programs, and European networks. Students' Organizations: ESN' Erasmus Student Network', Students' Club, the Students' Representation, Members of International Association of Students Economists and Managers (AISEC), Mentor program. The Botanical Garden – representative and educational research base, which has been developed since 1961. Officially, it was founded in September 1997 and was named "Šiauliai University Botanical Garden. " The total area of the Botanical Garden – 6,54 Hectares. The approximate number of various plant types and species – 4000, seed exchanges are implemented with more than 250 botanical gardens from various countries. Various events for the community of University, city, and region are continually organized and held; educational and cognitive activities are also developed in the botanical garden. Admission to the Botanical Garden during events is FREE. Šiauliai State College has proved that it has been acknowledged to be a Higher School in which qualified studies have been pursued during more than ten years of its activity. The studies are a practice-orientated modern and democratic environment of College that has been created. Šiauliai State College offers more than 20 study programs for its students. The programs include biomedical, social, and technological fields. Such a broad spectrum of study programs has been indicated by the needs of the labor market and development perspectives. In 1962-1973 Šiauliai K. Didžiulis Polytechnic School, which later became Šiauliai Higher Technical School with a branch in Mažeikiai. The construction study program has been implemented for 55 years. Ten college study programs were pursued when Šiauliai State College was established (in 2002–2003), the number of which doubled during the existence of the College. In 1992 students established their club “Rakštis.” In 1997 Šiauliai Higher Technical School, which replaced Šiauliai K. Didžiulis Polytechnic School, had 47 computers (only 3 of them were connected to the internet). In 1998 the first organized conference took place at Šiauliai Higher Education school. The scientific event was aimed at tourism specialists and their training. In 2002 a group of experts carried out an external evaluation of Šiauliai Higher Technical School. It recommended the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania to grant the right to carry out non-university higher studies. On 1 September 2002, Šiauliai Higher Technical School became the Faculty of Business and Technologies of Šiauliai College. Šiauliai Nurses School, which later turned into Šiauliai Higher Medical School, and in 2002 it became a Faculty of Health Care of Šiauliai State College did not have its premises till 1973 (it moved from one location to another five times). The director’s office of Šiauliai Higher Medical School for the most extended term, i.e., for 26 years (1981–2007), was held by doctor Algimantas Baubles. Nurses, currently called General care nurses, have been trained in Šiauliai for 70 years already. After the institutional assessment in 2014, the Šiauliai State College was accredited for a maximum period of 6 years. Children and grandchildren of the graduates of Šiauliai State College choose the same College. In 2016 6 new international cooperation agreements were signed.
