Seabury Hall is an inclusive community that prepares students for a successful college experience, fosters a passion for lifelong development of mind, body, and character, and inspires responsible citizenship. Seabury Hall is an independent, co-educational, college preparatory school affiliated with the Episcopal Church while welcoming all faiths and belief systems. The campus is populated with a warm staff whose most genuine desire is to support the students as they engage in an outstanding college preparatory education. This education would not be possible without the faculty themselves, who uphold strong academic standards and offer a wide variety of courses, including rigorous AP options, designed to help our students get placed into the country's best colleges. Through our website, you will also discover another aspect of the traditional college-preparatory experience: its offerings of art, dance, music, and fifteen different sports ranging from traditional volleyball, basketball, and cross country teams to island favorites of surfing and paddling. Seabury Hall has been educating the best and the brightest of Maui since 1964 while also evolving to serve today's students by balancing tradition and innovation. Seabury Hall is committed to creating a learning environment that allows young minds to expand. Students learn how to think critically, explore creatively, study, and question in a safe and caring atmosphere. As students move from grade level to grade level and the freedom of choice and responsibility increases, the support system of teachers, advisors, deans, counselors, and administrators works closely with students to help them succeed while discovering themselves and pursuing their passions. Students are nurtured to become proficient in the necessary skills of each core discipline with a college-preparatory curriculum. This gives them the structure and decision-making tools to become responsible, accountable citizens in a community where rules are followed, and respect for self, others, and their surroundings is our highest priority. Consequently, when students experience difficulty, the teacher, the advisor, the Dean, the Dean of Students, the school counselor, and the Upper School Head all work together to assist and guide the student to a positive path. Sometimes this occurs by listening, by directing a student to the right person or program, by offering advice, and often it occurs by doing some of each. Therefore, It is helpful that this support group be part of the "need to know" circle when information is disseminated regarding a student in difficulty. Each person will play his or her part. Advisors, deans, and the Dean of Students, for the most part, are not trained counselors and, therefore, will not attempt to perform counseling roles but instead will be supportive listeners and observers, referring concerns to the Head of the Upper School. The Head of the Upper School will then involve the appropriate support for people. Bishop Seabury Academy is a college preparatory school, but we are more than that. Bishop Seabury Academy is an Episcopal school composed of people with various beliefs and backgrounds: Christians, Jews, Muslims, and other faiths, as well as agnostics and atheists. Our goal as an Episcopal school is to nurture each person's spiritual and ethical life and welcome everyone to our community. Every Wednesday morning begins with an all-school chapel conducted by the school chaplain and facilitated by a group of students and faculty who promote our school's values. Chapel services incorporate elements of prayer, scripture, personal reflection, music, art, and technology. The school year also includes Convocation and Baccalaureate, two annual events that celebrate our community's inclusive Episcopal heritage. From our spiritual grounding in the Episcopal tradition, we also join in other religious traditions' celebrations. Within the school's liberal-humanist tradition of college preparation, students at Seabury study the world's religions and ethical traditions rigorously and respectfully. Our community service program incorporates each student into the life of our wider Lawrence community, with particular attention to and solidarity with those in need. At Seabury, we strive to serve, not to be served. A Seabury education pushes students to wrestle with the broader questions of meaning and value in life and come to answers by way of study, discussion, service, and self-reflection. At Seabury, each person is nurtured not only academically but also physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Our curriculum is global in orientation, meaning that students learn to understand and value our world's many cultures. At the same time, the curriculum is broadly humanist, in that they explore what binds us together as humans in all our complexity. The teaching of ethical conduct and cultural competency takes place in small class sizes and discussion-based learning. The school is affiliated with the National Association of Episcopal Schools, the Kansas Association of Independent and Religious Schools, the Kansas State High School Activities Association, the Kansas City Association of Independent Schools, and the National Association of College Admission Counselors. Part of the vision of Bishop Seabury Academy is to promote a sense of responsibility for self and respect for others as members of the community. To achieve this vision, Bishop Seabury requires middle-school students to complete 20 hours of community service and high-school students to complete 30 hours of community service during each academic year.
