  1. St Francis de Sales School is a three-form entry federated infant and junior school (a federation means that the infant and junior schools used to be separate schools – but now the two schools are united under one headteacher). We serve a community of nearly 700 pupils from nursery through to year 6. At St Francis, every child is encouraged to discover and nurture their God-given ability through a stimulating curriculum that has global dimensions. We aim to engage and inspire our pupils by going beyond the restrictions of the national curriculum – producing youngsters who can take up their place in secondary education and the world of work with the knowledge and confidence they need to be successful. As a Catholic school, our overall goal is to fulfill the Church’s mission in education by ensuring we provide the highest level of academic achievement in a moral and spiritual framework. So, at St Francis, we aim to have a school where: Parents can trust that their children are being academically challenged in a caring environment. Children are enthusiastic and independent learners motivated by the rich and varied curriculum. Each individual is developed to take their place as an active and productive member of the Catholic community and within the wider world. Our mission, To accomplish the aims, we strive to follow the guidance of St Francis himself, who said: “Be who you are and be that well.” This motivates everyone at the school to be the best that we can be and this is reflected in our mission statement. “At St Francis de Sales every child will achieve their excellence by making outstanding progress in their academic, social and spiritual development. This will enable them to excel at secondary school and then attend a further educational institution should they choose.” Underpinning everything we do are our values – the core principles which drive our behaviors at all times. It is our strong belief that pupils who are aspirational, respectful, resilient, engaged, team-players will be successful in anything they choose to do. We also ensure our pupils understand the wider ‘British values’ – these are democracy, the rule of law, liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance. These British values link very closely to our school values and they are promoted through all elements of the school curriculum, systems, and processes. St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic School originated in a school for boys, girls, and infants opened in 1827 close to the new church in Chapel Place. It had 65 pupils, a master, and a mistress by 1835. A new schoolroom was built in 1858 and enlarged in 1873. This was four years before classes moved to Brereton Road, where a new building was finished in 1882. (At that date school pence, paid by those who could afford to do so, were supplemented by a parliamentary grant.) The building comprised a schoolroom, partitioned off from the chapel on weekdays, and a classroom. This is now the Parish Hall. A separate boys' department was opened in 1885 and an additional schoolroom, for an infants' department, was finished in 1886. The enlarged school had 349 pupils by 1905, but attendance fell to 287 in 1919 and 252 in 1938. The school was evacuated to Ingatestone when war was declared in 1939. Children gradually drifted back to Tottenham so the school was reopened in 1940 using the air raid shelters beneath the church and in the convent (which had a separate school for girls). The convent received a direct hit during the war so in 1945 its school was taken over and extended in 1958 and 1969. So as a Catholic school, we encourage our children to be unique, creative, open-minded, and independent individuals, respectful of themselves and others in our school, our local community, and the wider world. We seek to develop the whole person and to nurture our children on their journey through life so they can grow into safe, caring, democratic, responsible, and tolerant adults who make a positive difference to the wider community. Children will have an entitlement to achieve well academically and at the same time to grow in equal measure in understanding Gospel values and living a rewarding Catholic life. The aim for our children is that when they leave in Y6, they are equipped to excel at secondary school and build the foundation for success in the world of post-compulsory education.
  2. Welcome to St Francis de Sales Catholic Infant and Nursery School. Our Infant School is an exciting place to be, full of outstanding children, enthusiastic, dedicated staff, and lots of wonderful surprises. We believe that Every Child Matters and learning at our school is fun and exciting, challenging and rewarding. We offer a warm and caring environment that enables children to feel safe and secure as they grow, learn and develop. The foundation of our success is happy children working hard in surroundings where they are valued and value others. The first years in school are the most important and can shape children's attitudes to learning and school long after they leave us. We hope by the time the children leave our Infant School they will have developed a good sense of self-worth and a stimulated mind so that they are happy and motivated as they continue on their journey through education. We are extremely proud of our Infant School and are always pleased to show prospective children and parents around so that you can see our school first hand. At our school, we aim to walk and pray with Jesus as a Christian family. To do this, we will: provide a warm welcome to all, be kind and loving to each other as Jesus taught us, help and support each other, bring the values from the Gospel to life within our school family, celebrate the diversity and talents of all members of our community. Inspire a love of learning in all. To do this, we will: provide an exciting, stimulating, and inclusive learning environment that both challenges and supports learners, provide a broad and balanced curriculum that encompasses and enhances social, intellectual, emotional, physical, moral, and spiritual development, promote active, independent skill-based learning, enable everyone to reach their full potential and develop to the best of their ability, provide opportunities for everyone to realize their dreams, recognize their gifts and raise self-esteem and self-confidence, learn about and respect other faiths and cultures. Work in partnership with our families, parish, and the wider community. To do this, we will: work with parents and support them in their role as first educators, promote and encourage positive links between our school and the parish community, use our talents to enrich the lives of others, and encourage active participation in community and school events, engage with the wider community through educational trips and welcome visitors into our school, recognize the wider community as an extension of our school family by, for example, participating in charitable events. The Early Years Foundation Stage provides children with a wide and balanced curriculum it encompasses learning for children in both Nursery and Reception and underpins how children learn through exploration, play, and engagement. There are seven areas of learning that make up the early year’s curriculum. The Prime Areas: Personal, social, and emotional development Communication and language Physical development The Specific Areas: Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, Expressive arts, and design. The children are taught through topics based on the Lancashire Scheme which has a focus each half term on one or more foundations subjects: Music, Geography, History, Art, and DT along with Science, English, Maths, and PE. The children are taught through a combination of discreet teaching and collaborative, investigative learning within Continuous Provision Areas where they are also able to practice the skills taught independently. We follow the “COME AND SEE” curriculum which is recommended by the Liverpool Archdiocese. The children also learn about two different faiths each year e.g. Islam and Judaism. This helps them to appreciate the multi-cultural society in which we live and become aware and appreciate cultures and religions other than their own. We aim to teach the year group expectations for English that are set out in the English Curriculum within the National Curriculum 2014. The curriculum is divided into Reading, Writing, with Spoken Language underpinning both. Spoken language underpins the development of reading and writing. The quality of language the children hear and speak is essential for developing their vocabulary and grammar and their comprehension for reading and writing. We aim to ensure that the children gain confidence and competence in spoken language and listening skills. The children are taught to decode words by sounding out the phonemes in a word and blending those sounds to say the word. They will be taught the speedy recognition of familiar words, also tricky and common exception words, words with unusual spelling patterns. Great emphasis in the teaching of Phonics continues from the Early Years into Key Stage 1.

  6. Our school motto is “Non-Accident” or “Shall Not Fail”. It is taken from our patron St Francis de Sales’ Episcopal coat of arms. This mantra inspires and sustains the determination to fulfill our core values and intentions. Service is, we believe, our fundamental role. As a school, we serve God and the church in faithfulness. We serve the children and the whole school community through our commitment to ensuring the best possible opportunities for success, happiness, and change lives for the better. We keep Christ’s example at the heart of all we do, with Gospel values to guide us in living out our faith as exemplary role models. Through our work we praise God. Integrity encapsulates a full and unwavering dedication to our mission and each other. When honesty and humility are integral to our actions and choices we have self-respect, dignity, and pride. This makes us worthy of trust and loyalty. Compassion characterizes how we treat all others. This is with kindness, friendship, and respect. Where love is, God is. 22. In so doing we serve society by developing and becoming responsible, confident, and aspirational Christian citizens. Faithfulness encompasses our spiritual relationship with God and the church. Values and Traditions of the Catholic Church: Live out and embody the values and traditions of the Catholic Church and through encouraging all to develop their understanding of and relationship with God, prepare our children to become caring, responsible, and respectful Christian members of society. Provide high-quality collective worship and enriching liturgical celebrations. Enable our children to acquire an excellent religious education, through a very well-taught and resourced Come and See program. Have the highest possible expectations and aspirations of each other recognizing and developing our uniqueness and individual talents, knowing that there is no limit to what can be achieved. Provide a broad, balanced, innovative, and challenging curriculum that is relevant to the needs of our children and inspires a love of teaching and lifelong learning. Instill and develop confidence, self-esteem, resilience, and determination rooted in our whole school values. Ensure that all children reach their full potential through effective planning, assessment, and evaluation, which will inform their next steps. Empower all to be responsible and conscientious stewards of our local, national, and global environments through curriculum study and community projects. Ensure everybody, without exception, has the opportunity to succeed and feel part of our school family. In so doing ensure that all feel welcomed, valued, respected, and included. Provide a happy, safe and healthy environment where all feel secure, listened to, and respected. Reading is the foundation and at the heart of all, we do. This shows our vision for reading and the exciting and inspiring ways that we teach and promote reading in our school. We've even written our books - maybe you've read one of them. We aim to Live out and embody the values and traditions of the Catholic Church and through encouraging all to develop their understanding of and relationship with God, prepare our children to become caring, responsible, and respectful Christian members of society. As part of this, we provide high-quality collective worship and enriching liturgical celebrations. These, we believe, enable our children to acquire an excellent religious education, through a very well-taught and resourced Come and See program. We encourage and develop all to be responsible and conscientious stewards of our local, national, and global environments through curriculum study and community projects. We have strong links with the parish community and other partners who help us achieve our mission statement and we work in harmony with them in a spirit of mutual respect and fellowship including other faith communities. View full school
  24. View full school
