The red cross of St George represents bravery and the white field, purity, and truth. The scarlet aloe is a proud symbol of the Border region. The school motto Veritas et Virtus (Truth and Courage) has inspired generations of girls since the late 19th Century. The magnificent teak carving depicted on the cover of the prospectus graces the entrance to the school hall, which is fittingly named St George’s Hall. It shows the courageous St George standing on the dying dragon, while the maiden Truth stands beside him. The Border is famed for its tradition of fine schools. Queenstown, in the heart of the region, is home to some of the finest, including Queenstown Girls’ High School, Queen’s College, and Balmoral Girls’ Primary School. The close ties between these great schools, the nurturing of cherished traditions, and the forging of new ones, as well as the healthy climate and wholesome environment, all combine to make Queenstown a place of personal growth and lasting memories for young people who are fortunate enough to be educated there. At Queenstown Girls’ High School students have access to excellent academic facilities and a wide choice of subjects designed to prepare them for tertiary education in any sphere. The computer room, Music Block, media center, and other enrichment facilities, are all an integral part of the school’s academic framework. Beyond the school environment, the girls are challenged using innovative educational adventures such as the annual Grade 9 academic field trip, Grahamstown Science Festival, etc. The well-qualified Girls’ High teachers are committed to upholding the school traditions of encouraging all pupils and staff to reach beyond themselves. It’s an approach that is designed to produce outstanding academic results, and more importantly, girls who can play their part as caring, confident, and creative citizens of South Africa and the world at large. Sport and extra-mural cultural activities also play a vital part in providing opportunities for personal growth and achievement. Queenstown Girls’ High School is blessed with outstanding sporting facilities, including a swimming pool, netball courts, hockey fields, tennis courts, Astroturf, athletics facilities, and ideal surroundings for cross country running. Girls are encouraged to participate in sport for the joy of it and for the valuable life lessons it offers. Girls’ High girls have ample opportunity to compete against their peers in the town, the Border region, and further afield. Not surprisingly, in a school environment that encourages girls to express their unique interests and talents, there is always a wide array of cultural activities on offer. Chess, Drama, Arts, First Aid, Interact, Student’s Christian Association, Public Speaking, and Xhosa Society are some of the many extramural activities available to the girls. The school also has a well-established choral tradition and it is considered an honor to be selected as a member of the school choir. Other forms of cultural expression regularly emerge from ordinary classroom activities. History excursions focusing on our local heritage, are some of the enriching cultural outings that have started in this way. View full school
