Established in 1887, Pomona College is a private liberal arts college in Claremont, Calif., about 35 miles east of Los Angeles. We offer a comprehensive curriculum, with 48 majors in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. One of the premier liberal arts colleges in the nation, Pomona, is a close-knit and diverse community of accomplished scholars, scientists, entrepreneurs, and artists passionate about making a difference in the world. There are approximately 1,670 students who come from 63 nations and all 50 U.S. states, as well as the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico. With a student-faculty ratio of 8 to 1, our students work closely with their professors in the classroom, lab, and field. And our location—within an hour of Los Angeles and the mountains, desert, and beaches—provides countless opportunities for field study, research, and internships. Almost all students live in one of 16 residence halls on our 140-acre campus. As the founding member of The Claremont Colleges, a unique consortium of seven colleges and graduate schools, we offer both the advantages of a small liberal arts college and a large university's resources. Pomona College admits domestic applicants regardless of their ability to pay and then meets all admitted students' full demonstrated need. Fifty-six percent of students receive financial aid. There is no such thing as a "typical" Pomona College student. All Pomona students have a few essential things in common—most notably, academic ability and an interest in doing something meaningful with their lives—but they are as varied as they are talented in most other ways. They come to Pomona from almost every state and from around the world—from large cities, suburban areas, and rural corners that do not appear on any map. They come from a wide range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds and almost every imaginable kind of school, and they bring with them a wide range of interests and aptitudes. A degree in the liberal arts from Pomona College prepares students for post-collegiate lives rich and varied. From first-destinations to advanced degrees, from first jobs to long careers with unpredictable twists and turns, alumni "bear their added riches" throughout their lives in ways that reflect the bold thinking and creative passions nurtured during their time at Pomona. We determine to need a careful review of each family's financial circumstances and give personal attention to every admitted student's aid application. At Pomona College, we take pride in being a residential college where the line between living and learning is practically non-existent. Ninety-four percent of our students live on campus all four years, and many professors live within five miles of campus. This creates a close-knit community where new collaborations or eye-opening discussions can spring up anywhere – a dorm, club meeting, or lunch with a professor. It flows from learning objectives established for multiple levels and domains of teaching and learning (institutional, general education, and department-/program-specific). Also, the Division of Student Affairs maintains an active program of learning assessment to support students' co-curricular interactions and overall development. Pomona students follow their passions in many directions and are actively engaged in activities outside, alongside, and within the classroom. On October 14, 1887, Pomona College was incorporated by a group of Congregationalists who wanted to recreate "a college of the New England type" on the West Coast. The Office of Undergraduate Research at Cal Poly Pomona (OUR-CPP) was established in 2013 to increase undergraduate student participation in research programs. Participation in research as an undergraduate has been proven to not only expand your academic experience at CPP but also improve student retention and graduation rates. Cal Poly Pomona is one of only two polytechnic universities of the 23 California State University campuses and 11 in the nation. The classical meaning of polytechnic is "skilled in many arts." At Cal Poly Pomona, it means more than that. Here, we weave technology and hands-on learning experiences into our academic programs, bringing textbook concepts to life in a technologically advanced and multicultural world. Students also experience a broad-based education through our general education program. All of our academic disciplines embrace the teaching of theory through application. We take a multi-faceted approach to problem-solving, looking at a situation from all possible angles. A biology student might use digital image analysis to monitor the growth of a virus. An urban and regional planning student might use GIS (geographic information systems) to chart the shrinking of low-income housing in an urban area. Cal Poly Pomona benefits from a richly diverse community reflective of the greater Los Angeles area. Our student body is roughly one-third Latino, one-quarter Asian, and 3 percent black. The university also has a healthy percentage of out-of-state and international students. U.S News noted that Cal Poly Pomona was eighth-most diverse among regional universities in the West and the tenth most diverse nation. Designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, Cal Poly Pomona is in the top 25 colleges awarding baccalaureate degrees to Hispanics. The Hispanic Business magazine also lauded the university's ability to help Hispanic postgraduate students succeed. Cal Poly Pomona opened on Sept. 15, 1938, with an all-male enrollment of 110 students as the Voorhis Unit of California State Polytechnic College in San Luis Obispo. It was located on the 150-acre San Dimas site of the former Voorhis School for Boys. Breakfast cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg deeded 813 acres of land located three miles south of the Voorhis campus to California in 1949. In 1956, 508 students and 44 faculty and staff moved from San Dimas to the Kellogg campus. In a first for the all-male campus, 329 women joined the student body in 1961. The Pomona campus separated from the San Luis Obispo campus in 1966 and became California State Polytechnic College, Kellogg Campus. University status was granted in 1972.
