  1. Nihon Institute of Medical Science, a member of the Josai Group, traces its beginning to Josai Business School, established in 1918. The Institute was founded in 2007 with Josai College of Medical Arts & Sciences as a forerunner. Together with this College, the Institute has sent out many specialists in health and medicine into Japanese society. In Japan, we provide world-class, cutting-edge medical care. Medical Science will further advance at a rapid pace. Since medical care has to be provided based on scientific evidence, we need to acquire the same knowledge and technology level. However, medical science is not perfect. We cannot prevent or cure all kinds of diseases. You may get sick even if you lead a healthy lifestyle. Early diagnosis does not always assure complete recovery. We have to face this circumstance with our patients. Thus, we need to have kindness, consideration, preparation, and qualification as medical professionals. Therefore, the Nihon Institute of Medical Science (NIMS) provides knowledge and technology based on scientific evidence and cultivates humanities based on its predecessor, Josai College of Medical Arts and Sciences. We support students to acquire knowledge and technology in response to the demands of the times and enriched humanities during the four years at NIMS. The Institute's mission is to offer quality education in the allied health professions, enabling the students to stay on the highly advanced and specialized medicine. The spirit of foundation, "Repayment of kindness with gratitude," handed down since the Group's beginning, lies at the core of the Institute's educational efforts. The Institute believes that it is no longer enough to provide programs for students to be equipped with knowledge and skills. Students are expected to acquire skills to assist the clients in the increasingly fractionalized clinical sites fully. The Institute provides an inter-professional learning environment with the participating disciplines, including nursing, radiological technology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and clinical engineering. It is of primary importance to foster heart-to-heart communication skills as true medical professionals. The Nihon Institute of Medical Science is highly aware of the graveness of the health hazards caused by smoking and strives to develop medical professionals who protect those around them. At the Nihon Institute of Medical Science, we educate and train healthcare and medical specialists who work directly with human lives. Our prohibition of smoking on all campus grounds has been highly praised by the medical institutions that employ our graduates.
  2. Our university aims at producing people with ambition, who are moved by the hardships of these troubled times and compelled by a spirit of benevolence, mercy, and fraternity to undertake the reform and advancement of society. To attain such a goal, mere scholarly pursuits or the desire for self-advancement would not be sufficient. Our university must be devoted to academic tradition and driven by a passionate love of humanity. Nihon Fukushi University is a university of social welfare deeply rooted in the local community with global aspirations. The university has eight faculties and four graduate schools across four campuses, striving to nurture welfare professionals supporting happy lives for all people from a wide range of fields such as "health and medical services," "welfare and economics," and "education and growth." There is a reason why we use the hiragana characters instead of the conventionally-used kanji characters for the word Fukushima (welfare) when we describe ourselves as a university of social welfare. While both kanji characters originally mean "happiness" when used individually, the term tends to be narrowly perceived to refer to socially vulnerable people. However, as the scope of welfare has expanded and the society is now required to ensure the realization of "normal" "living" and the "happiness" that comes with it for "everyone," the university uses the expression to signify its dedication to the cause. The Chita Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture, where the three campuses with faculties are located, is known as "the most energetic peninsula in Japan." It is an area rich in nature, with frequent industrial, community, and nonprofit activities. At each faculty and lectures on campus and learning in seminars, the emphasis is also placed on fieldwork that allows students to visit the local communities and learn practical skills from the residents and organizations. At Nihon Fukushi University, we look forward to seeing students' enrollment with the desire to support people's happiness and contribute to the future development of society by learning the knowledge, skills, and spirit of "welfare" through practical and hands-on experiences with the regional community. Among those universities offering four-year courses and specializing in social welfare, Nihon Fukushi University and the Faculty of Social Welfare have the most extended history, with the 2017 academic year celebrating its foundation's 60th anniversary. In commemoration of this, the Faculty of Sports Science was newly established on the Mihama campus, improving not only the educational facilities where health and sports training and seminars can be carried out but also the sports environment as official matches can now be played. 4 special courses and a scholarship entrance exam system were also implemented for the Faculty of Social Welfare. In the 2015 academic year, the Tokai campus, our third campus in the Chita Peninsula, was newly created by establishing the Faculty of Nursing and relocating the Faculty of Economics and Faculty of International Welfare Development from the Mihama campus. Besides, satellite campuses have been opened in Tokyo (Shimbashi), and Osaka (Nishikujo), where practical training and employment support can be provided for undergraduate students, and correspondence courses and graduate school classes can be conducted. We now total eight faculties, ten departments, and four graduate programs, with some 12,000 undergraduates and postgraduates spread over the Nagoya graduate school campus and university campuses in the northern (Tokai City), central (Handa City), and southern (Mihama Town) areas of the Chita Peninsula, along with satellite campuses in Tokyo and Osaka. With each campus as a core, the university takes on two roles: one being a Center of Community (COC) building a vibrant regional community and providing chi (knowledge) in the region to promote and enrich welfare, medical care, industry, and technology by making the best use of its unique cultural and natural assets and the other being a Center of Excellence (COE), an outstanding global base of chi (knowledge) building a compassionate welfare society. The Chita Peninsula, a truly "Glocal" (global and local) area with good land, sea, and an airport, is an environmental museum with a blend of industry, culture, and nature, a real treasure trove of chi (knowledge). This area offers optimal conditions for practical learning that considers global and regional changes. With this rich area as a base, we sincerely hope our students can refine these two kinds of chi (knowledge and community) and become self-motivated, innovative, and well-rounded Fukushima specialists with the world at their feet.
