At Newark, Ohio State University provides access to the university by extending Ohio State courses, programs, research, and service to many Ohio communities. Faculty members at Ohio State Newark are involved in research, and many work closely with students on their research projects. Twenty-three students participated in the 2017 Student Research Forum, submitting proposed and completed research and poster presentations. The forum aims to increase collaborative, student-faculty research endeavors at the Newark Campus, encourage participation in honors research, and further the OSU Denman Undergraduate Research Forum's goals and the OSU Undergraduate Research Office at the Newark Campus. The Ohio State University Newark is a doorway to over 200 majors in an environment that has produced leaders in nearly every industry sector. Ohio State Newark offers general studies coursework applicable to all undergraduate degree programs at The Ohio State University. Also, upper-division courses in several departments are offered. Entire degree programs may be completed at Ohio State Newark in the following areas: Early/Middle Childhood Education (B.S.Ed.) General Business (B.S.B.A.) English (B.A.) History (B.A.) Psychology (B.A. or B.S.) Social Work (B.S.S.W.) A Master of Arts in Teaching and Learning and a Master of Social Work is also available. By 1960, 46 scholarships worth $12,000 were awarded to students. In 1966, seven thousand Licking County residents pledged over $1 million toward the cost of land and construction of the first campus building. In 2010, local philanthropists J. Gilbert and Louella Reese challenged the community by matching all gifts up to $10 million. By the campaign's conclusion in 2012, nearly $21 million had been raised for the Next Generation Challenge, which provides scholarships. A real community effort, Ohio State Newark, was founded in 1957. Community members gathered to paint, build, and carry the furniture into a remodeled barn, the campuses' temporary first home. The first classes took place in the evenings at Newark High School, with 80 students and eight faculty members. Today, the campus features eleven buildings, including a recreation center and two residence halls. Both Ohio State Newark and COTC pride themselves on providing the student with personal attention, state-of-the-art technology labs, and credentialed and experienced faculty on a beautiful, technologically sophisticated campus. The Office of Financial Aid at The Ohio State University at Newark assists students and families through the financial aid process. In most cases, the student will be eligible for federal financial aid regardless of income. Academic experience is not limited to the classroom. Student research grants up to $1500 are available to full-time students and can be utilized for various purposes. Recipients are encouraged to present their proposal or completed project at the Ohio State Newark Student Research Forum and the Denman Undergraduate Research Forum on the Columbus campus. Since 1774, Newark Academy has remained true to the spirit that guided its founders by providing an education that equips our students with the knowledge, skills, and character that prepare them to contribute meaningfully to society. Our program, created by outstanding faculty, combines high academic standards and an innovative, forward-looking curriculum that sets the Newark Academy educational experience apart. Designed to suit younger students' needs, the Middle School has its own unique identity and signature curriculum. Project-based learning, collaborative classes, and end-of-year Capstone Experiences capture students' curiosity and create opportunities for them to apply their growing knowledge to real-world situations. By eighth grade, Newark Academy students demonstrate a level of self-understanding unusual for their age by assembling detailed portfolios that highlight their progress in acquiring skills and knowledge across various disciplines. In the Upper School, the curriculum grows more sophisticated, as our excellent teachers engage and inspire students in a wide variety of courses. An intellectual vitality informs our academic program, which allows qualified students to take a range of AP and IB courses as well as an impressive array of electives. Our large campus provides outstanding athletic facilities for our teams. Our art department is known for its offerings and accomplishments in theater, the fine arts, dance, and choral, classical, and jazz music. The school's required Immersion Experience places students in unfamiliar contexts--farms, foreign countries, and wilderness areas, for example--where they must adapt and apply newly acquired skills. As a result, our students gain self-confidence, maturity, and a deeper understanding of the world and their place in it. Though our students and faculty set high standards for themselves, they thrive in a comfortable atmosphere of trust, respect, collaboration, and good humor. A familiar spirit and purpose bind the community together, as do the traditions we share, from all-school morning meetings to our annual Spirit Week and Homecoming celebrations. Today, Newark Academy continues to move forward, building its endowment to sustain its mission in perpetuity and planning strategically for the other facility and program growth.
