Academic Advising is a decision-making process by which students realize their maximum educational potential through communication and information exchanges with an advisor. It is an ongoing, multifaceted, and shared responsibility of both the advisor and advisee. The advisor, utilizing a developmental, prescriptive, and prescriptive, strength-based approach, serves as a constant facilitator of communication, a coordinator of learning experiences, course and career planning and academic progress review, and an agent of referral to other campus services. Mansfield University's Academic Advising Center aspires to provide an excellent advising experience by developing academic and career goals, meaningful collaborative relationships, appropriate academic decision making, and navigational skills that will result in students valuing and applying their liberal arts education. Mansfield has exchange programs with more than 150 universities in 50 countries. Through our exchange agreements and our membership in the International Student Exchange Programs (ISEP), the most extensive student exchange program in the world, you can study in English in many countries, or you can improve your French, German, Spanish, or get introduced to other languages and cultures. It is affordable. For most of the programs, you pay MU tuition and room and board, plus the cost of a plane ticket and some fees, and special MU study-abroad scholarships may be available to help with costs. You can go for a semester, a year, or summer, and you can take general education courses or some major-related courses. And MU and ISEP carefully monitor countries where our students study, so it is okay to go abroad today. The mission of the Mansfield University Counseling Center is to enhance the quality of life for students during their collegiate years, as well as the duration of their lives. We are committed to developing the whole person: academically, personally, spiritually, socially, and physically. The Mansfield University Counseling Center is committed to enhancing the psychological health and personal effectiveness of all students. The Mansfield University Counseling Center is committed to the success of our students. We offer individual, couples, and family counseling to students. A Counselor is on-call for crises after hours of regular fall and spring academic year. The services of the Counseling Center are supportive of the academics and are not to replace long-term outpatient therapy programs. A student requiring psychiatric evaluation will be referred to accordingly. Drug and alcohol assessments can be completed at the Center, and students requiring more treatment may be referred to an outside agency or program. Our services are strictly confidential. The Department of Academic and Human Development (AHD) contributes to a premier liberal arts education by providing quality student support services. The Ohio State University at Mansfield has proudly served Northeast Ohio for more than 50 years as a regional campus of The Ohio State University. Ohio State Mansfield fulfills our land grant mission set forth by the Morrill Act in 1862 to provide open access to higher education for all Ohioans. Local citizens Avery Hand and James C. Gorman led a grassroots campaign to raise funding to purchase 640 acres of picturesque woodlands north of Mansfield. The campus has grown through the years to include high-tech classrooms, a cafeteria, cafe, student union, theatre facilities, a recreation complex, and a state-of-the-art Bromfield Library and Information Commons. North Central State College is a valued partner on campus. The Ohio State University at Mansfield is quickly becoming the college of choice for students throughout Northeast Ohio. Affordability, excellence in teaching, small class sizes, and opportunities for research and internships draw students. Students may complete one of ten bachelor's degrees offered at Ohio State Mansfield—Business, Child & Youth Studies, Criminology, Early Childhood Education, Middle Childhood Education, English, History, Psychology, Social Work or Sociology, or start at Mansfield and transition to the Columbus campus after a year or two. Master's degrees also are offered in Education. Most students are the small class sizes taught by award-winning faculty rather than graduate students that is the main draw. The entire faculty at Ohio State Mansfield has obtained terminal degrees 97 percent hold doctorate degrees. Many are conducting groundbreaking research in addition to teaching classes. Students often create their research projects with faculty mentors. An excellent student support system, from Admissions and Advising to the writing and math labs, gives students a jump start to college life. Tuition is just $7,644 full-time for two semesters. Low cost on- and off-campus student housing is available within walking distance of the campus. The Mansfield Steiner School began in 1986 with a small group of children in a parent-built mudbrick room in Maindample. This venture came about due to the vision and dedication of two local teachers who wanted to provide their children with a Steiner education in a country environment. In the early days, the parents carried the enormous task of building, developing, maintaining, and running the school without government support or funding. Later, the school received formal registration and some government funding, although voluntary labor and fundraising continued to be vital to the school’sschool’s ongoing success as it is today. By 1996 the school had outgrown the Maindample site, and with a successful application for capital funding, the decision was made to move into Mansfield. Over the years, a series of building programs have helped build and develop the beautiful and well-resourced school we have today. Our program aims to foster imagination and a sense of wonder through stories, songs, creative play, interaction with nature, and involvement in everyday tasks. At Mansfield Steiner School’sSchool’s Playgroup, Kindergarten, and in the Prep year, your child will learn through imitation, sensorimotor play, and creative experiences. We hope they will feel at home in our warm, nurturing environment filled with beautiful, natural, open-ended play materials. At Mansfield Steiner School, the class teacher moves up through the primary grades with the children. This affords a sense of security and continuity of teaching for a child, parent, and teacher. Classroom work is carefully structured with a rhythmic balance of activity, which helps keep the children fresh and receptive throughout the day. The first part of the morning focuses on ‘‘Main Lesson’Lesson’ work in which a subject, such as maths or literacy, is concentrated on for several weeks. This allows in-depth studying of the new subject matter. The Main Lesson is followed by ‘‘practice sessions’’ in which the previous main lesson content is revised and developed. The afternoons comprise a range of artistic and practical activities such as craft, music, cooking, sport, gardening, art, and drama. Steiner education’seducation’s unique aspect is the sequence of ‘‘Epoch stories’’ that feature at each level from Class One to Class Eight. Rudolf Steiner suggested that the myths and legends that arose during each epoch of civilization were an appropriate foundation for story-telling, literature, drama, and thematic class work when matched with the corresponding stage of development in children aged between seven to fourteen years of age. Class teachers can attest to the validity of this direction. They witness how easily and enthusiastically the children relate to the sequence of the stories brought to them. The groundwork is laid to study moral development, history, geography, and sciences through the story. The Secondary School curriculum is designed to encourage the emergence of global citizens. The Main Lesson Structure established in the Primary School years is preserved throughout the Secondary School. Students continue to explore a full range of academic subjects in an integrated and creative way. The work of the Secondary School teacher is to present Main Lessons that are thematic, exploratory, and which develop judgment and independent, lively, and creative thinking within the scope of the subject. After the Main Lesson, the rest of the day is dedicated to practicing lessons. These lessons include Mathematics English, chemistry and biology visual, art and design, dramatic, choir, musical and movement arts, French sport, and physical education. View full school
