Based on Moscow Technical Institute for the Fishery Industry, Kaliningrad State Technical University (KSTU) is justly considered the beginning of Russian higher fishery education and a range of scientific schools in navigation, commercial fishery, and progressive technologies of food production. At present, it develops as a multi-disciplinary institution considering the demands and the economic potential of the Region, maintaining traditions of high-quality specialist training for the fishery industry. Students are trained in 42 higher educational courses at various levels. Namely, Bachelor, Professional Diploma, Master, Postgraduate (Kandidat Nauk) and doctorate (Doktor Nauk) Degrees professionals are offered various upgrading courses. Six hundred teachers and researchers, including 75 professors holding the Doktor Nauk Degree, 80 academicians and corresponding members of international and public Russian Academies of Science from the University's faculty. Twenty-eight scientists are awarded titles of honored workers of science, Russian higher education, branches of science, and the fishery industry. Scientific research is traditionally undertaken in many areas. It is the most important for modern navigation, fisheries and seafood processing, power engineering, construction, production automation and control, information technology, natural science, nano-technology, etc. The University founded effectively working for schools in ichthyology, commercial fishery, shipbuilding and repair, automation of production and control, technique and technology of raw materials processing. There are 12 research laboratories and scientific centers, four of them being of the applied character. Four dissertation councils work at the University. Recently, scientific work has involved the University in 25 federal scientific programs and TEMPUS and TACIS projects. Regional representatives of public, professional Academies of Science applied Centre for new Information Technologies, Research Institute for Maritime Engineering Service, Institute of Ecology and Sustainable Development successfully operate on the University basis. International cooperation of the University with foreign educational and research organizations is continually expanding, with the Baltic Sea region. KSTU has been admitting international students for over 50 years. More than 1500 graduates are overseas students from Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. Training at the University is conducted in Russian, so every international student takes a one-year preparatory course mastering the Russian language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. A modern methodology of teaching Russian allows overseas students to continue their studies at the University's appropriate faculty. KSTU students can take one-semester or even a year course at partner universities in exchange programs. Participation in various international programs enables graduate and post-graduate students and academic staff to refine their knowledge abroad, upgrade their qualifications, and improve their language skills. Every year the University participates in 10-15 international projects and programs, conferences and seminars, practical training, and 150-200 lecturers, graduate, and post-graduate students. Today there are about 250 international students at the University. Academic and scientific contacts have been established with European, Asian, American, and Australian universities. Active cooperation with the Baltic States such as Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and England promotes good neighborly relations and cultural ties.
