The wonderful work the children are doing and the activities they take part in, both at Nursery and Key Stage 1, based at our Old Jamaica Road site, and at Key Stage 2, located in Alexis Street. There is before and after school care provision available. At KS1 this is provided by our in-house club and at KS2 is run by Fit for Sport. Spaces for either of these are limited. We strive to instill the attitude of being able to communicate our thoughts and ideas clearly so others can understand them as it is one of the most important life skills. This was one of the most common requests by the pupils at St James', we care about, and place a great deal of emphasis on the importance of expressing thoughts respectfully and clearly. We work hard to help our pupils understand the importance of understanding others, respecting their views, even if they may differ from our own, and having empathy and respect for all. As a Church of England school, we explicitly teach and encourage tolerance of other faiths, cultures, and customs and celebrate these continuously. We aim for all of our children to learn at the pace that is right for them and pride ourselves in sending our Year 6 children to secondary school with the basic skills in Reading, Writing, Communication, and Mathematics. We believe with a solid grounding in these key subjects, any bars to future learning, as life-long learners, will be removed. In our ever-changing world, we encourage children to be confident, proficient, and safe when using computers and the internet. With this contemporary computer literacy, we believe children will be able to use technology to their advantage in a safe, purposeful, and enriching way. Children are taught to code and 'debug computer systems to create their computer programs. Children should have resilience, determination, and the ability to be resourceful to meet the challenges and demands we all face in real life. To ensure our children develop their critical thinking skills, we work tirelessly to question to stretch their abilities and think about a subject to the greatest depths they can. We all need to be able to face challenges and know how to adapt to these when presented. We aim for our children to be able to adapt and cope with a variety of surroundings and challenges they may face and to equip themselves with the necessary resources and social and emotional intelligence to do so. Prayers encourage us to remember that God is at the center of our lives, at the beginning and end of our days, and in the decisions we make. Therefore, the pupils and staff of St James say prayers at the beginning of the day, before and after lunchtime, and at the end of the day. Prayers are also shared at staff meetings, governors meetings, and parent gatherings. The whole school assemblies take place on Monday and Friday. The Monday assembly is led by the Headteacher and is centered around the Gospel readings. The Friday assembly is our award assembly which offers us an opportunity to acknowledge and reward children for their achievements both in and out of school. It plays an important part in promoting the ethos of the school which is that all children are valued and all achievements are recognized. KS1 and KS2 assemblies take place at different times of the day on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. KS2 Wednesday assembly focuses on the “Wednesday Word.” Father David, our parish priest, celebrates class Masses in the school with the children, staff, and parents every half term. The Parish community of St James the Great is also invited to attend. The pupils attend whole school Masses at our parish church, every half term, and on Holy Days of Obligation if they occur in school time. St James’ pupils contribute to the order of the Mass. At Gorton Primary School we deliver the International Primary Curriculum as part of our curriculum provision which is closely matched to the NC requirements. The International Primary Curriculum (IPC) is an internationally-minded curriculum that is used in several countries around the world. The IPC provides opportunities for global learning – allowing pupils and staff to make links. The goal of the IPC is to nurture a love of learning through a combination of academic, personal, and international learning. Children will develop many skills which they will need to face the world of tomorrow confidently. ST James adopted the IPC in 2015 and we form part of a global learning community that uses the IPC to improve children’s learning. Children at St James learn through a series of units of work, of which there are over 130 to choose from. Each unit is carefully selected to meet the needs of our school community. The units of work have a theme which children are interested in and relevant to today’s world. Children learn many of the subjects through the theme so that their learning has meaning to them. The units of work have suggested tasks linked to learning objectives however the nature of the curriculum allows staff to be creative and focus upon the needs of our children. The development of skills is a very large part of the IPC learning activities at St James has been designed so that our children develop these important lifelong skills. The IPC has a self-review process that sits alongside the curriculum. The core purpose of the self-review is to allow schools to review and improve the way that IPC is delivered in their school. The beating heart of any educational establishment is learning. Learning can take place in many forms – academically, socially, spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Our curriculum provides all our children to learn and develop in many ways. Nobody can predict the nature of work and life opportunities that will be available to our children in the future. Indeed many of the jobs of the future do not even exist today. The IPC has a strong focus upon a skills-based approach to prepare all children for the fast-changing world in which they will be living in. At St James, we encourage active and cooperative learning. Learning is central to all we do. Not only do our staff have a responsibility to ensure that our children learn and develop but we also encourage our children to take responsibility for their learning. Parents also play a significant part. We ensure that at the start of a unit of work, parents are informed about what their children will be learning and suggest ways in which they can play an active role in their child’s development. Work is celebrated and shared throughout the year with parents and the school community. The Department for Education states that there is a need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.” Here at St James, we are dedicated to promoting British Values and ensuring we prepare our pupils to be global citizens of the future. St James' C of E School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Working together, striving for excellence, we can make our school a place that truly belongs amongst the best there is. We believe that it is very important at St. James' to have a curriculum that is relevant to the interests of our children, that grabs their attention and that is adapted to their needs. For this reason, the curriculum may change over the year. A Geography unit planned for the summer term may be changed or adapted as the needs and interests of the children develop over the year. Whenever a change occurs, the updated document will be posted below. Parents will always be sent a letter at the start of the half term, outlining what subjects are being taught during that period. At St James’ C of E Primary School, we believe in the concept of the learning community and lifelong learning. Through our teaching, we aim to equip children with the skills, knowledge, and understanding necessary to become independent learners, with the ability to make informed choices about the important things in their lives. We believe that appropriate learning and teaching experiences help children to continue to develop and explore their potential. Our SEND provision allows pupils with learning difficulties the opportunity to follow a curriculum specifically tailored to develop life skills and to give pupils self-confidence through their learning thus enabling them to maximize their potential and to work independently. We are committed to narrowing the attainment gap between SEND and non-SEND pupils. This may include short-term intervention learning programs, before and after school skills groups and other learning interventions developed to personalize learning. We have very good attendance as pupils want to come to school to experience our high-quality learning provision. Respect runs through our school and is central to the way that we treat each other. It is through these core ideals that we can promote British values. Democracy is highly visible within the school. Pupils have the opportunity to have their voices heard through our Pupil Parliament and Pupil questionnaires. The Pupil Parliament is a particular focus this year, highlighted in the School Development Plan. They have already delivered an Anti-Bullying assembly, identified opportunities to raise money for charity, and supported the Friends of St James Christmas Disco. Once a year we complete a PASS survey, gathering the views of all children on a range of topics, including their attitudes to school, learning, and themselves. The importance of Laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout regular school days, as well as when dealing with behavior and through school assemblies. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind rules, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves, and the consequences when rules are broken. Visits from authorities, such as when the Police came to talk to the school on the issue of dangerous parking, help reinforce this message. Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school, we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and empowering education. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advise how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons. Whether it be through choice of challenge, of how they record, or participation in our extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given the freedom to make choices. Underpinning our school ethos and behavior policy is the notion of “Love your neighbor as yourself”, and pupils have been part of discussions and assemblies related to what this means and how it is shown. The key to this idea is that of mutual respect, and this is discussed regularly in class and during assemblies. Children are encouraged to think about what respect means and how to show it, while also being asked why it is important. This is achieved through enhancing pupils' understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them opportunities to experience such diversity. Assemblies and discussions involving prejudices and prejudice-based bullying have been followed and supported by learning in RE and PSHE. We are lucky to have a very diverse school population and encourage children to talk about their family backgrounds warmly and positively. This can be seen in many ways at school, from the way that children interact with each other, to the annual Eid and Diwali parties we hold at school to celebrate these festivals. The Friends of St James' is a group made up of parents and friends from the school and the local community. We love organizing things to do for the children and families of our school. We aim to help the school by raising some money to provide exciting opportunities for the school children.
