Globe Primary School was built in 1874 and has a long-established tradition of providing education for the Bethnal Green community. Our school is a community primary school in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and serves a varied and diverse community from many cultural backgrounds. Boys and girls attend our school from the age of three, when they start nursery, to the age of eleven after which they transfer to a secondary school. Our school has an additionally resourced provision for children with special educational needs. There are thirty places for children who need additional support in their speech, language, and communication development. These places are allocated by the Local Authority. The school environment consists of a large three-story refurbished Victorian building within a walled playground. We have a continuing program of improvement to keep the premises attractive, safe, comfortable, and stimulating for everyone. We also have an extremely well-equipped Computer Room which houses 33 touch screen computers in which classes are taught weekly computing lessons. In addition to this we have class sets of laptops, learn pads, and iPads which are brought into classrooms for use. We try to stay on top of the latest computing developments. The children are loving using our iPods at the moment. For short we call it the ‘Language Provision’ and is a specialist provision within our mainstream primary school. It is for children who have a statement of special educational needs for difficulties specifically related to understanding and/or using spoken language. Children attend full-time and get extra help, including speech and language therapy. We have high expectations of all our children and encourage them to have high expectations of themselves. We want them to be confident in their ability to make progress and happy to have a go without worrying about making mistakes or ‘getting things wrong. We are an inclusive school and as a staff, we work hard to provide high-quality teaching for all and to help children make progress in all that they do. We encourage them to keep up their efforts, to recognize and celebrate their successes, and to stay optimistic when things don’t go according to plan, knowing that there is someone at hand to encourage and support them. We know that this is especially important for children with special educational needs and disabilities and we will strive to find ways to overcome anything that gets in the way of their learning so that they experience a sense of success and share this with their families. Our provision takes into account every aspect of a child’s development. The Curriculum gives the children the opportunity to achieve the highest possible standards of numeracy and literacy. To enable children to develop socially, morally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually we provide stimulating learning environments in which children are encouraged to learn through their own experiences and apply their knowledge independently. In a small school, each student is known as an individual. Students have an education tailored to his/her need, has achievement tracked and intervention strategies implemented if required. In October 2014 Ofsted rated the Early Years (Nursery and Reception) provision in the academy as 'Outstanding'. Our stimulating, purpose-built nursery offers a daily morning or afternoon session where the intake is 25 pupils per session. Children in the nursery are often learning how to be apart from their parents for the first time. We teach them the skills and understanding to help them to learn independently, communicate effectively and work with others. In Reception, children begin to move from play-based learning activities to more structured practical activities. We offer full-time places for 60 children in one intake. The EYFS Framework covers the development and learning of children from birth to the end of their reception year in school. We aim to build on children's previous experiences as they enter our school to ensure a happy and purposeful year in Nursery or Reception. This enables our children to be ready and confident for Key Stage 1. A strong command of English and mathematics is vital for success across the whole curriculum. We prioritize these subjects and dedicate extra time to them so that pupils are confident and have the strong foundations they need to succeed. Children also study foundation subjects as part of the National Curriculum. Science Computing Art and Design Design Technology (DT) History Geography Music Physical Education Our curriculum has been designed to not only enable students to access the best universities but also to provide them with the skills needed to become leaders in their community. We aim to create independent young men and women who have the knowledge, skills, and motivation to make a difference in the world around them. We have a two-year Key Stage 3, with students choosing their GCSE/BTEC options in Year 8. This enables students to begin their chosen options in Year 9, providing them with a foundation year before Key Stage 4. At Key Stage 4, we want as many pupils as possible to follow the English Baccalaureate as this will provide them with more choices post-16. We expect students to play a role in our community – leading others through their example and their commitment to the values of the academy. We believe we are stronger together than we are alone and because we believe this we know that while our success is important, our participation in the community is what makes us. Ark Globe Academy Sixth Form offers Level three qualifications as either A Levels or Professional Pathways with a BTEC Extended Diploma. All sixth form students are full-time and are working towards Level 3 qualifications that will enable them to progress either to Higher Education, higher-level apprenticeships (including degree apprenticeships), or school leaver training programs with larger employers.
