Meeting the Needs of Students with Special Educational Needs, EGA – an inclusive school for all. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, like all schools in Islington, is committed to meeting the needs of all students, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). We expect that children and young people with SEND will receive an education that enables them to make progress so that they: Achieve their best Become confident individuals living fulfilling lives Make a successful transition into adulthood, whether into employment, further or higher education, or training We will use our best endeavors to make sure that a student with SEND gets the support she needs. This means doing everything we can to meet the student’s special educational needs. We aim to meet the needs of students whose needs fall within the following four areas: Communication and interaction Cognition and learning Social, mental, and emotional health Sensory and/or physical Medical needs Throughout their time at school, girls may receive varying levels of support, according to their changing needs and circumstances. We aim to identify girls who need additional support as early as possible and by providing that support, enable them to make good progress. The particular interventions we put in place will vary over time as needs change. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School runs an extensive program of Out of School Hours Learning activities which include before school, lunchtime, after school, weekend, and holiday activities. There are also trips abroad, trips to outdoor activity centers around Britain, and trips to theatres and galleries, both to perform and watch the arts. The Library and ICT spaces are open before school, at lunchtime, and after school. A Breakfast Club runs every morning in the dining hall. We have a broad curriculum offer where we strive to meet the interests and needs of all our learners and maximizes the number and range of subjects students can study. In lessons, all students are challenged to broaden their knowledge and understanding of the world. In tutor time students are encouraged to discuss key issues, so sharing and understanding a range of perspectives. School events celebrate success and progress in all its forms and celebrate the diversity of our population. At EGA we actively promote an ethos where everyone, regardless of background, can achieve their best in whatever field they choose. We are a school with a diverse community and because our students work together and play together they will take this spirit of understanding and tolerance into the community and their adult lives, building the future for us all. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School is a place where learning is without limits for all. We are committed to ensuring that all members of the school community have the opportunity to learn, develop and make progress regardless of membership of any protected group. The Cloud, EGA’s library, is situated on the top floor of the building with panoramic views of the city. With state-of-the-art technology and a great collection of resources, the library is a peaceful place for students to work and relax, and for holding classes. The Cloud is a popular place for students to spend time. There is open access before and after school, at break and lunchtimes, where students spend time reading, selecting books, and completing homework and research for projects. A rota operates at lunchtime. During lesson time The Cloud is used for class bookings and individual study. View full school
