  3. St Edmund’s is a Catholic school in Hertfordshire steeped in history having been founded in 1568 by Cardinal William Allen and as such is the oldest Catholic School in England. The school has a strong Catholic ethos based on four key principles christ-centered Education, Scholarship of St Edmund, Education for the whole person and home, and the wider community. These are the foundation of the education that we provide all of our students from 3 – 18. The school has four main entry points. Students may join us when they turn 3 in our Nursery and throughout all years in our Prep school where we have space. Entry to the College is at 11 in our Elements year group, at 13 in Grammar (Year 9), and at 16 to join Rhetoric (Sixth Form) and again we accept applications at all other years if places are available. Preference is given to students admitted to the Prep before the start of Year 5 and they are not automatically required to sit the College entrance examination unless they are applying for an Academic or All Rounder scholarship or there is a concern that the pupil is unlikely to benefit from the education provided by the College. We welcome students from all faiths who appreciate what a Catholic education offers. St Edmund’s is set in an impressive 400-acre site in East Hertfordshire with excellent transport links to London and the surrounding counties. Only 15 minutes drive from junction 25 of the M25 and immediately off the A10 road it, therefore, has impressive links directly to London. The school is also only 20 minutes from London Stansted airport. St Edmund’s is a community that values both academic excellence and the achievement of one’s personal best, right through from our Prep school to Sixth Form and beyond. We are proud of our academic achievements at GCSE and A-Level. Rooted in Christ and Catholic tradition and under the guidance of our patron, St Edmund, we aim to realize the God-given potential, in body, mind, and spirit, of all members of our community through service and leadership. At St Edmund’s we strive to: Provide a rounded education for the whole person – intellectual, physical, emotional, and spiritual. Reflect the scholarship of St Edmund by offering a balanced and challenging curriculum for each individual. Show concern for all within the College community, demonstrate our collective commitment to be truly Christ-centered in all we do, and ensure that the students’ experience of relationships within the College reflects the Gospel maxim, “Love thy neighbor as thy self”. Build on our enriching Catholic heritage, making the prayer, worship, and liturgy a central part of our lives and our community. Create meaningful interaction between the College, home, and the wider community and prepare our students to make their way in the world while making a difference to the world. View full school
  4. Established in 1749, St Edmund’s combines respect for tradition and history with a fresh, engaging, and forward-thinking attitude to the education of young people. Our approach is focused on the unique abilities and needs of individual pupils. All our pupils are valued for their contribution to the school and we take great pride in their successes. St Edmund’s today is a dynamic co-educational 3-18 day and boarding school. Our pupils benefit from a caring and supportive environment, high-caliber teaching, and a holistic educational approach that seeks to develop creativity, leadership qualities, and original thinking. A broad academic curriculum and extraordinarily diverse co-curricular program enable pupils to find their path and grow to ‘be all they can be’. Our small class sizes enable the personalization of learning so that pupils receive the attention and academic challenge they need to excel. Every pupil here is known and understood. The fact that we educate children from the age of 3 to 18 underpins the strong family atmosphere and sense of community that pervades the school. The school has a long-established reputation for outstanding pastoral care. This is our starting point. We believe if pupils feel happy, secure, and supported at school they will naturally benefit from our outstanding educational opportunities and enjoy the wealth of stimulating extra-curricular activities on offer. We also look to develop the whole person. Our dynamic sports provision, extensive activities program, and exciting range of outdoor education opportunities enable pupils to develop vital qualities such as leadership experience, interpersonal communication, the ability to work in teams, and empathy for others. In consequence, our school produces remarkable young people. Pupils leave St Edmund’s as assured, articulate, thoughtful individuals who possess a strong social conscience. St Edmund’s is proud of its pupil-centered and ambitious academic ethos. We seek to foster original thinkers with the intellectual and personal skills to be leaders and decision-makers in the future. We offer a variety of challenging and exciting I/GCSE and A-level courses which appeal to young people whatever their strengths and interests. Highly qualified teachers and small class sizes mean that young people receive inspirational instruction, with vibrant debate and individual attention coloring every classroom. Pupils develop learning skills through project work and research opportunities such as the Extended Project Qualification and the Durrell Essay. We encourage cross-curricular work to promote original ideas and multi-dimensional thinking. Essentially, our pupils are encouraged throughout their time at St Edmund’s to aim for and achieve the very highest academic standards of which they are capable. View full school
  5. St. Edmund’s Catholic Primary is a community of faith where we aim to keep Christ at the center of everything we do. We celebrate the uniqueness of every individual nurturing them to achieve their full potential. Our understanding and experience of the love of God grow through our way of living, behaving, learning, and teaching, which is inspired by Jesus. Our vision is an expression of how we seek to move the school forward and aims to sustain the developments we have made towards being an Outstanding Catholic School. We strive to inspire pupils who will learn, grow and develop in faith, talents, and skills. We nurture young minds to aspire to succeed and to live confidently in an ever-changing society. Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfill their potential. Children develop quickly in the early years and a child’s experiences between birth and age five have a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe, and happy childhood is important in its’ own right. Good parenting and high-quality early learning together provide the foundation children need to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up. The Early Years Foundation Stage applies to children from birth to the end of the Reception year. In our school, all children enter Reception, after an induction period, from the September of the academic year in which they will turn five years old. These children are in the final year of the EYFS. Teachers liaise with the Inclusion Leader to address the needs of specific children whose progress is not as expected or where children face particular problems. Where necessary, with parental consent, the expertise of outside agencies is called upon for extra assessment, support, and advice. We believe that play, both indoors and outdoors, is the fundamental way in which young children learn. Play can be enjoyed and challenging. When playing, children behave in different ways. Sometimes, their play will be boisterous, sometimes they will describe and discuss what they are doing, and sometimes they will be quiet and reflective as they play. Through play, children will be developing skills across all the Prime and Specific areas of learning, working towards achieving the Early Learning Goals. As e-Safety is an important aspect of strategic leadership within the school, the Head and governors have the ultimate responsibility to ensure that the policy and practices are embedded and monitored. The named e-Safety coordinator in our school is Mrs. Pearson. All members of the school community have been made aware of who holds this post. It is the role of the e-Safety coordinators to keep abreast of current issues and guidance through organizations such Enfield LA, Becta, CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection), and Childnet. The e-Safety coordinators will be supported by the Inclusion Manager, as part of her responsibility for Health and Safety and Safeguarding children. The e-Safety coordinator/IT Subject Leader will ensure that Governors have an understanding of the issues at our school about local and national guidelines and advice and that they remain updated. A Catholic School supports parents in their responsibility of handing on the faith to their children. The School staff share with parents the aims of instilling in the children the Christian virtues and moral code together with the basic doctrines of the Catholic Church. We seek to recognize the unique qualities in each child to allow them to develop fully within a Christian framework. All children take part in quiet times of prayer and reflection at the start and end of each session. Classes are involved in collective worship and liturgies. We aim to provide a balanced, challenging, and creative curriculum allowing children to develop fully in all aspects of their life. Great importance is attached to developing a curriculum following national standards, alongside a spiritual life, to create a working environment and ethos which prepares the children for their adult lives In designing the curriculum, the Governors and staff have taken account of the Statutory Orders issued in respect of the National Curriculum and the EYFS Curriculum. The School is routinely inspected by Ofsted, most recently in June 2017, when it was judged to be ‘good’ with outstanding for Personal development, behavior, and welfare. A person has a disability if he or she has a physical or mental impairment that has an adverse, substantial, and long-term effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities. At St. Edmund’s we are committed to the inclusion of all the pupils who, having met the admission criteria, are placed on our registers. We recognize that their inclusion may warrant preparation in terms of physical access, access to the curriculum, and access to information. We will not discriminate against a pupil on the grounds of disability and will make reasonable adjustments to accommodate them in so far as our resources allow. We are committed to making changes and removing barriers, where feasible, in whatever area, which will affect this access and inclusion. At St. Edmund’s we believe inclusion means that all children have access to a broad and balanced curriculum and are given the support they need, dependent on the availability of resources, to achieve their potential. These pupils may be gifted and talented, have special educational needs, have a disability, have English as an additional language, or be from the traveling community. We recognize that this Accessibility Plan must be adequately resourced, implemented, and reviewed every three years. Our action plan showing how the school will address the priorities is attached. 6. We are a warm and friendly school with a strong sense of community, family, and excellent links to our parish. We believe that by working together, (parents/carers, teachers, and governors), we can help our children become life-long learners and confident individuals. We want them all to be able to make positive contributions to the world in which we live. Our past pupils and current parents are a testimony to this. Good communication is essential in providing the best learning experience for your child and our website will go towards helping to achieve this aim. We have regular opportunities for you, as parents and carers, to meet with staff at the school (both informally and formally) to discuss your child’s progress and ways in which we can help them to move forward. Our teachers are enthusiastic and strive to encourage a love of learning in our pupils. We have a broad curriculum where a wide range of teaching styles are used to ensure that every child’s needs are catered for. St Edmund’s is a family school and we know that starting school is not only a milestone in a child's development but is a big step for each family, and therefore, we welcome you and your child. We aim to provide a secure, stimulating environment in which young children lay foundations for learning and life, through their development of skills, which are underpinned by our Faith. Staff in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), work closely with our Nursery and Reception parents to establish strong links between family, school, and the wider parish community. Religious Education (RE) is at the center of all our teaching, through the ‘Come and See’ program and reflects the attitudes outlined in our Mission Statement. There are also regular opportunities throughout the year, for the morning and afternoon Nursery children to attend mass with the whole school. St Edmund’s Catholic Primary School first opened its doors in 1939. In the early days, the school was administered by the Sisters of Mercy and many ex-pupils will remember the sisters and staff who helped form their early and lasting memories of school life. Online safety is taught as part of our Computing curriculum as well as being covered in standalone PSHE lessons. We strive to develop the children’s understanding of the potential dangers as well as the positive aspect of using devices with online functions. The children are taught how to use technology safely, respectfully, and responsibly as well as learning how to seek help or report concerns that they may have when using the internet. Every child at St Edmund's has signed an age-appropriate Internet Acceptable Use Agreement and is expected to follow the guidelines whenever they are online. We aim to offer frequent Online Safety workshops for parents to guide the various ways they can help their children stay safe online. The following links/documents provide excellent information and tips to help you explore Online Safety at home with your children. It is a primary aim and mission of our school that every member of the school community feels valued and respected, and that each person is treated fairly and well. We are a caring, Christian community, whose values are built on mutual trust and respect for all. The school behavior policy is therefore designed to support how all members of the school can live and work together in a supportive way. It aims to promote an environment where everyone feels happy, safe, and secure. At the age of eleven, the children transfer to several different secondary schools. Each September, we hold an information evening on Secondary Transfer to support parents with the process. We encourage parents of Year 5 children to visit the secondary school in which they may be interested without their children in the first instance and to take their children to see a ‘short list’ of preferred secondary schools, for evening viewings, when their child is in Year 6. St Edmund’s Catholic Primary School is a Voluntary Aided school and its Governing Body consists of both appointed and elected governors. Foundation governors at the school represent the interests of the Diocese of Westminster who are trustees of the school. Foundation Governors are appointed in the name of the Archbishop and form the majority of the governing body. They have a legal duty to preserve and develop the Catholic character of the school and to ensure that the school is conducted under its trust deed. The Headteacher is automatically eligible to be a full member of the governing body by the office. Headteachers have the choice of being a governor. Both teaching and support staff who are paid to work at the school are eligible to stand as staff governors. Parents of pupils registered at the school are eligible to stand for election as a parent governor. View full school
