St David’s is a small, happy school which is renowned for its family atmosphere. Our main aim is to provide a safe and nurturing environment in which children will develop a respect for and understanding of others and their beliefs, whilst pursuing a curriculum that enables them to maximize every aspect of their creative and academic intelligence. At St David’s pupils are given every possible encouragement and opportunity to reach their full potential. Pupils’ experiences are enriched by a wide, varied, and imaginative program of extra-curricular activities, which include many team and individual sports, music groups, and creative activities such as drama and gardening. Our rich and stimulating curriculum is delivered by a talented and caring staff and our small class sizes enable children to receive individual attention and to feel secure, happy, and confident. Great importance is attached to the spiritual background of the School’s life and the training of character. The school is essentially Christian in ethos, but children of every creed are welcome and as Religious Education is non-denominational each child can participate and contribute. At St David’s we are passionately committed to ensuring that each of our pupils achieves their full potential. As each child progresses through school, their academic progress and social development are carefully monitored. Assessment is carried out through observations and testing in-class time, and by internal exams which take place during the Autumn and Summer Terms. Wishford Schools is a family-run group of independent prep schools with a commitment to delivering the highest standards of education and providing the best possible experience to both pupils and parents. Schools in the group benefit from the support of the group’s Executive Team, the expertise of its Director of Strategy and Education, and Director of Compliance, and a vastly experienced Advisory Board. Furthermore, Heads and teachers across the group can share ideas and best practice, St David’s Prep is a selective school. Informal assessments and interviews for the Reception places are held in the January of the preceding academic year. The school takes children into the Reception Class full time, at the beginning of the academic year (1st September) in which they become five. Additional places may be available from Year 1 onwards and we are happy to accept pupils, subject to our usual criteria at any stage during KS1 or KS2. All prospective pupils will be required to undergo a short interview and informal assessment and ideally spend some time in the classroom. We will also require a copy of their latest school report. The inspectors commented "the quality of care, support and guidance is outstanding" and noted that "the grades learners achieve on A level courses are frequently outstanding". Because we're based on one compact campus, near the center of Cardiff, we're a real community with a very supportive atmosphere. Since our founding in 1972, St. David's (named initially Hale High School) has set its sights on becoming nothing short of the finest school students and teachers can make together. Aristotle thought that teachers and students shared a kind of friendship—the friendship of the master and his apprentice, who are joined in a common pursuit of what is truly good. That idea seems right to me. Not only do our teachers desire good for their students, but they are themselves lifelong students seeking better to know and love all truth. Put another way, and they do not just talk about mountains. Our teachers climb mountains—tall mountains—with their students! Education by experts and specialists so often makes school seem a kind of drudgery, a thing to be gotten through before real life can begin. This is so opposite to how we think about St. David's. As the poet Hopkins once said, "charged with the grandeur of God." A school in the Episcopal tradition, St. David's, is established to believe that God has created all things and called them "good." Then he went a step further and made us in the "image of God." This means that it is a divinely ordered thing when your child begins to learn about the world. At least, that is what we believe at St. David's.
