In 1932 the Council of People's Commissars adopted a historic resolution of Dagestan State Medical Institute foundation to prepare the medical staff for Dagestan itself and other North Caucasus republics. Special attention was paid to the medical staff training of the indigenous republic nationalities. Initially, Dagestan State Medical Institute had a limited theoretical and clinical base and the only general medicine department. Annually, there were accepted about 150 people for the first course. The Candidates of Sciences mainly headed the Institutedepartments. Over the years of its activity, our Institute experienced formation period severity and hardships, epidemic trouble, famine and devastation brought by the Great Patriotic War, the difficult years of post-war reconstruction, the challenging reorganization period. It has not only survived, but all this time, it has been working with extraordinary dedication, strengthening its positions and increasing its glory. At different times the fate of the University was ordered by the devoted to their duty people, who dedicated their lives to the service of medicine. They possessed good citizenship, keenness, artistic creation, but the most important thing was that they were distinguished by extraordinary kindness, cordiality, and decency. The high point of the Institute development was in 1970th-1980th. There were built morphological body, teaching and laboratory facilities, and several ancillary facilities. The Republic Clinical Hospital expanded significantly; dental and pediatric departments came into service. All this allowed the dental and pediatric departments to have been opened. The Institute qualified teaching staff has changed qualitatively. Almost all the departments have been headed by Doctors of Sciences, Professors mostly by those who were our institute graduates.t DSMU there a highly qualified teaching staff has been formed, which is characterized by high professionalism and dedication to their profession. It supports and develops the traditions established by the university old-stagers. Seven hundred six teachers are working at the University, including 66 Professors, 179 Associate Professors, 418 Candidates of MedicalSciences, and 116Doctors of Medical Sciences. University scientists are continuously involved in many annually held international conferences, congresses, symposia, congresses (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Chicago, Geneva, Basel, Stockholm, Vienna, Cyprus, and others). The percentage of teachers with scientific degrees (74.7%). University is at a level with the Russian central medical universities. More than 5,000 students study at the University; there are more than 100 international students from 12 countries. Over 1,700 doctors annually improve their skills at the Faculty of Advanced Medical. During its progressive development, the University has become a multi-functional institution. There are 75 departments in the structure of DSMU, each of which cherishes the names of those who have written glorious pages in the University's history. They built themselves no pyramids of copper and did not set bronze obelisks. Their inheritance has been contained in their works, books, and textbooks. The memory of them will remain forever. Reflecting on the ongoing changes, the medical university staff realizes that it is about to enter a new era in which they are expected the new realities, new challenges and that its primary responsibility for the future is to leave behind a generation of educated professionals, healthy research schools aiming at creativity and knowledge. Today, the university staff sees its mission in training the highly qualified personnel and active participation in the public health system reforming, so as in the information technologies implementation in educational, medical, and scientific processes. The University Administration has prepared DSMU development plan comprising priorities for improving the quality of the educational process, innovative development, scientific research expansion and intensification, medical work improvement, the postgraduate professional education systems development, education quality management, the world educational space integration, the corporate culture formation, student's personality balanced education.
Dagestan State University was founded in October 1931 as the Teachers' Training Institute, and later, in 1957, it was transformed into Dagestan State University (DSU). During its formation and development, the University has played a prominent role in the socio-economic and cultural development of the peoples of Dagestan and the development of its scientific, technical, educational, and artistic communities. Thereby, the University performed a historical mission in the life of the peoples of Dagestan and Russia. Today DSU ranks as a significant educational, scientific and cultural center that provides training at all levels of pre-university, University, postgraduate, and further education in 59 specialties and degree programs for natural sciences, liberal arts, and technical studies. The University has an innovative academic, research, and organizational structure that includes 17 faculties, seven filial branches, 103 departments, two museums (historical and biological), a virtual library containing more than 2.5 million volumes, a biological station, and a planetarium. It also owns its seaside recreation base, a sports complex, a clinic, and a students' resort center. Within the University, several scientific schools meeting high international standards have been formed. These scientific schools provide the base for training and comprise different education forms such as specialization, postgraduate studies, and doctorate. DSU is an advanced research center with 70 subject areas for postgraduate studies and 18 subject areas for a doctorate. There are seven dissertation councils in Dagestan State University specializing in these areas of scientific research. DSU team amounts to nearly 3,000 members made by academic staff and other employees. The University academic staff includes one member of the Russian Academy of Education, four corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Science, 11 members of branch academies, 216 professors and doctoral degree holders, 618 senior lecturers – holders of candidate degree, more than a hundred distinguished scientists and education workers of Russia and Dagestan. The total number of DSU students exceeds 20,000. At present, nearly 600 DSU postgraduates are seeking candidate and doctoral degrees. Dagestan State University is a leading university of North Caucasus Federal District for its extensive use and promotion of modern technologies in academic and scientific work and management. It was the first in Dagestan to open the Internet Centre and to introduce distance education. Currently, much attention is being paid to innovation in higher education, the creation of small enterprises, and young researchers' projects in small enterprises.
