Currie Community High School is a non-denominational school serving the areas of Currie, Riccarton, Baberton Mains, and Juniper Green on the southwest side of the City of Edinburgh. For more than 350 years there has been a school in Currie. There is, therefore, a long tradition of service to the young people and community of Currie. We are a fully comprehensive, non-denominational high school situated in the South West of Edinburgh. We offer a wide range of courses covering a wide range of subjects from the broad general education in S1-3 through to Advanced Highers in our senior school. Also, we offer a large range of wider opportunities within and beyond the school day. The school aims to give pupils an insight into sustainable development issues and to provide opportunities for them to make a difference in their school environment. Pupils currently assist with maintenance of the ecology sites, recycling, and litter initiatives and are working on health promotion and safe routes to school. We are committed to supporting the development of the whole pupil and as a result, wish to encourage their development in spiritual, moral, social, and cultural terms. Our primary aim is to combine high personal and social standards with a friendly atmosphere and mutual tolerance in which pupils of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds, of all religious persuasions, and varying levels of ability are welcome. We are committed through our school aims to encourage pupils to develop and mature in an atmosphere of tolerance and understanding of the needs of others and society. We strive to create and maintain a climate within which pupils feel valued, included, secure and happy. The example and actions of all staff are important in creating this atmosphere and this will be reflected in the relationship between staff and pupils. If pupils are always treated with honesty, fairness, and respect, the same behaviors can be expected of pupils by staff. In turn, pupils will benefit from the supportive environment in which they are encouraged to behave appropriately towards one another. In December 2014 we completed our whole school consultant The school has developed a variety of approaches to sustainability both through the curriculum and whole school ethos initiatives. The school grounds include a strip of woodland, a green garden, a new fruit orchard, a pond with a surrounding marsh garden, a willow coppice, and a Japanese garden. These are used extensively for teaching pupils about biodiversity, how living things interact, and the impact that the settlement of Currie has had on local habitats. Pupils carry out curricular work in the grounds in Science, Geography, Biology, Art and Design and Social Education and this is under further development. We enjoy extremely good links with our three associated primary schools. This ensures that the transition from primary to secondary school is as smooth as possible and that our young people’s education is progressive and coherent. As a community school, we are mindful of our responsibilities in serving the wider community. This involves the provision of as broad a range as possible of activities to meet the needs and interests of those within our wider community. We are continually looking for ways to strengthen our partnership with parents. Currie Primary is a school in the southwest of the city of Edinburgh. We currently have 2 nursery classes and 15 classes in the main school. Our school role is growing and is currently at 441 with another 120 children in our Nursery. Currie Primary was officially opened in 2008 following the amalgamation of Curriehill and Riccarton Primary Schools. We have 16 classrooms, a large nursery, music/drama room, 2 halls, sensory room, 1 meeting room, 4 offices, and a staff room. Our large playground is a mixture of grass and tarmac. we have specialist teachers in Music and PE as well violin and brass instructors for our older pupils. We are a very active Eco school. We achieved our second Green Flag in August 2013 and in June 2013 gained level 2 accreditation in the RHS benchmark scheme to get schools gardening. We have achieved Health Promoting Schools Level 2 status. We are currently working towards becoming a Rights Respecting School. Currie Primary is a non-denominational school. We do however visit Currie Kirk and welcome their minister to our assemblies during the year. Assemblies take place this year on a Friday morning. At Currie Primary School achievement is as important to us as attainment and we provide our pupils with a very rich and balanced curriculum across all areas. All pupils are encouraged to do and be the best they can be. Pupil's voice is very important to us and we have a very active Pupil Council and Eco Committee, ensuring our pupils are represented on developments within our school. We value a positive relationship with our parents and fully believe education is a shared responsibility. We use online Learning Journals to share learning with parents as it happens and encourage parents to work with us in a variety of ways – working alongside us in classes, parent appointments, through assemblies, open afternoons/evenings, trips, etc. We have an active PTA and Parent Council who meet regularly. They work closely with us to ensure that the school is supported in many ways. We pride ourselves on the ethos in Currie Primary School. Many visitors have commented on the warm welcome they receive and on the friendly atmosphere in the school. We believe that everyone, whatever their position or job in school, contributes to a very successful team. Nether Currie Primary School is on the outskirts of Edinburgh, in the southwest of the city. Edinburgh is the Capital City of Scotland in the United Kingdom. The school was built in 1961 and lies at the center of an attractive housing estate with the majority of children living locally and able to walk to school. Our pupils are in 7 classes from Primary 1 to Primary 7, covering the ages 4 to 12. Most children move to the local secondary school - Currie Community High School - after Primary 7. Our very good links with the High School ensure that the transition is as seamless as possible. We also work closely with Juniper Green and Currie, the other two cluster primaries. We have a large playground with plenty of room for children to play a range of games. Extensive grassed areas with picnic tables are also enjoyed by pupils whenever possible, as well as a climbing wall, climbing ropes, a tunnel, and access to the woods and play area in Muirwood Park. The school is an important part of the local community. The many groups involved with our school include a very active Parent Teacher Association and an elected Parent Council. An established partnership with The Friends of Muirwood Park also helps to support our work and there are good links with Currie Library and Currie Kirk. The single-story, split-level building contains 7 classrooms and associated cloakroom and toilet facilities, a support for learning base, and a library. There is a large hall (with stage) which provides accommodation for dining, recreation and social gatherings, and a bright, well-equipped gymnasium. At Nether Currie we strive for excellence academically whilst also seeking to develop each child's interpersonal skills, values, and beliefs. To support this process we have eight values that are embedded into the life of the school. These are: Caring Healthy Active Responsible Inclusive Safe Motivated Achieving Children are rewarded for displaying these values through our house points system. The children have been working hard this year to develop a character to represent each of our values, and this family of characters will be published in time for the next school year. To help promote a positive learning environment that nurtures the development of our school values, each child is placed in one of our three school houses: Kinleith, Lennox, and Norton. Children earn house points for displaying our school values, and these are totaled up at the end of each week. The winning house gets an extra five minutes of break time the following week. Each house has children from Primary 1 to 7 allowing our older children to inspire, care for, and help to nurture our youngest children. Each year there are many opportunities for houses to meet and complete tasks, collaborate, and compete with the other houses in a very positive way. By creating opportunities for our children to compete and succeed in a supportive and structured environment, we are encouraging them to aim high and become the very best they can be. At Nether Currie we strive to create a warm and caring environment where children and staff treat each other with mutual trust and respect. We believe that this approach creates the most effective learning environment, both in terms of academic attainment as well as the development of children's values and beliefs. We believe that learning positive and appropriate behavior is an incredibly important part of developing our children as people. In school, we use a restorative approach to behavior management which seeks to restore positive relationships through discussion and reflection. This is also very effective as a preventive measure as our children become more able to manage their behavior, stopping things from getting out of hand before they do. Building strong and trusting relationships between all involved in the school is very important in delivering the best outcomes for our children. Positive relationships have been linked with improved interpersonal skills, motivation, and attainment. At Nether Currie we seek to develop positive relationships through restorative practice, our school values, our house points system, and our day-to-day interactions between staff and children.
