History isn't an anchor here, but a strong foundation for the College's dedicated learning community, furthering exploration, discovery, and creativity. Today, the College is led by Stephen C. Osborne '73 (2018–present). Osborne is serving as interim president and is the fourth alumnus to hold the office. Interim President Osborne's priorities include enhancing the campus and academic experiences, sustaining philanthropic support and alumni engagement momentum, and planning for the College's 250th Anniversary Celebration in 2020. The Marlene and Nathan Addlestone Library is the region's top research library. This modern, three-story facility has a holding capacity of one million volumes, seats 1,400 people, and has 300 computers, including dozens of laptops that can be checked out and linked to the building's ubiquitous wireless network. Addlestone librarians are very dedicated and knowledgeable and help students. Faculty find precisely what they need from a sprawling collection of bound books, periodicals, reference materials, and hundreds of electronic databases and journals — many of them full-text. The Addlestone library is also the prime study spot on campus. A huge draw is Rivers Green, a large inviting lawn and patio area behind the library equipped with tables, chairs, and high-speed WiFi. Founded in 1770, the College of Charleston is the oldest educational institution south of Virginia, and the 13th oldest in the United States. During the colonial period, wealthy families sent their sons abroad for higher education. By the mid-18th century, many leading citizens supported establishing an institution of higher learning within the colony. On January 30, 1770, Lieutenant Governor William Bull recommended to the colony's general assembly establish a provincial college. However, internal disagreements, political rivalries, and the American Revolution delayed progress on this front. After the war, South Carolinians returned its attention to establishing a college. On March 19, 1785, the College of Charleston was chartered to "encourage and institute youth in the several branches of liberal education." Several of the College's founders played key roles in the American Revolution and created the new republic. Three were signers of the Declaration of Independence, and another three were framers of the U.S. Constitution. Other founders were or became federal and state lawmakers and judges, state governors, diplomats, and Charleston council members and mayors. Robert Smith served as the College's first president. Educated in England, he was ordained as a priest in the Anglican Church and relocated to Charleston, where he served as rector of St. Philip's Church. During the American Revolution, he supported the patriot cause and even served as a soldier during the city's siege. He later became the first Episcopal bishop of South Carolina. View full university

The University of Charleston is an independent, co-educational residential university with two central locations in West Virginia – the main campus in Charleston and the second campus in Beckley. The University also has a robust online program. The University of Charleston is unique in offering a performance-based curriculum focused on specific outcomes, determined to be essential abilities every student should have for a lifetime of learning and opportunity. The Liberal Learning Outcomes – critical thinking, communication, citizenship, creativity, involvement, ethical practice, and inquiry – are embedded in all UC programs to help students understand and apply how coursework relates to the real world, the student, and lifelong career building. Many programs provide advanced, unique professional development opportunities, including internships, campus speakers, and other events and mentoring. The mission of the University of Charleston is to educate each student for a life of productive work, enlightened living, and community involvement. The University's mission is an expression of shared values and goals. These include: Offering selected quality programs affording professional preparation in a liberal arts environment. Preparing students to live in an increasingly complex and changing society by helping them develop the knowledge, abilities, and character needed to be lifelong learners. Utilizing and enriching the strong relationship between the University and the greater Charleston community prepares students for a life rich in community involvement. UC prepares students to contribute to society immediately and throughout their lives. Their work will vary tremendously, but we hope that each graduate will improve his or her world. "Productive" work is not defined by the acquisition of significant material gain for the graduate, but by the positive impact of the work on the graduate's community and world. College graduates must own a broad range of knowledge to thrive in modern society. Graduates should be scientifically, economically, politically, aesthetically, and culturally literate. They should have a sense of history and shared values and commit to moral purpose and personal character. UC attempts to develop within every student a pattern of community involvement. Our democratic society's foundation rests on community involvement, so we want graduates to take leadership responsibility and initiative in shaping organizations, institutions, and communities. We believe that college is about finding the right destination. Developing the tools and knowledge to become a sought after employee. Discovering innovative approaches to solving issues. And building relationships that will help nurture and guide you to reach your goals, create new and lasting friendships, and help you feel a part of a thriving community. We have also done away with that long list of required courses and put the basics like writing, science, and ethics into each major – so rather than learning them in the abstract, you will learn them in the context of your future career. Add to that the opportunity to earn your bachelor's degree in less than four years, the opportunity to accelerate directly into a graduate program, and the ability to customize your education to match your strengths and interests, and you are looking at a revolutionary education. Focused and flexible, the University of Charleston is home to a distinguished group of graduate programs, including our School of Business, School of Pharmacy, and Physician Assistant Program. Graduate studies are distinctive in their real-world design and innovative approaches that quickly move advanced learners towards their professional goals. Regardless of the program you choose, you will explore new concepts with exceptional professors that provide the individual attention you require. Students from 43 countries have chosen the University of Charleston for its welcoming atmosphere and the beautiful riverside campus in the state capital of West Virginia. Students can enjoy the personal attention of a small, private college and excellent ESL support on our residential campus in Charleston. Experience a life of opportunity – join us at UC. We think you will agree that it is one of the best investments you and your family will ever make. This page provides you with various resources and information concerning all financial aid facets, including federal grants, UC scholarships, and loans. The University of Charleston was founded in Barboursville, West Virginia, as Barboursville Seminary, affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church South. The first campus was located in the courthouse complex abandoned when Cabell County moved its government seat to Huntington. There were 25 students enrolled. The UC IRB must approve all research with human subjects carried out by the University of Charleston faculty and students. No research involving human subjects may begin without express written consent from the University of Charleston's (UC) Institutional Review Board (IRB). All Investigators must complete or have completed the National Institutes of Health (NIH) training course "Protecting Human Research Participants" within the past three years. A current certificate for each investigator must be submitted with each application.
