- At Blackfen school, our vision is to raise aspirations and release the potential of every young person. We do this through our growth mindset culture which underpins our aspirational ethos. It is a privilege to work with all members of our community to ensure that we realize this vision. Outstanding schools foster life-long curiosity about life: equipping students with skills and ambition nurturing professionals whose passion is creating learning that inspires young people to pursue the very best in themselves and their work. Our students achieve at the highest possible level. There is no ceiling to what they can do or achieve on their journey with us. Our students also gain experience to support their educational careers: performing a role in the school production or visiting galleries in New York, Madrid, or Amsterdam championing a bid to make the school a Fair Trade school or being a member of our student learning consultant team. We believe that our school community is a happy and successful one because we offer a unique learning experience of ongoing challenge in a caring environment. Blackfen sets out to challenge students from day one in year 7 to their last exam in year 13. We believe in hard work, resilience, and a determination to succeed, learning from the lessons of failure to become successful. We believe in raising the aspirations of everyone in our community by inspiring a belief that ‘anything is possible’ amongst our students, staff, governors, and parents. We believe in developing our students into confident, responsible citizens ready to play an active role in the wider community. The curriculum at Blackfen aims to complement the needs of our changing society to equip students with the knowledge and skills to be successful citizens. To us “raising aspirations – releasing potential” is not just about results. We aim to develop our young people as citizens who readily take on responsibility. As a school, we know that we have a key role to play in this. We want our young people to develop confidence and self-esteem through a variety of opportunities available to them. Our core business is teaching and learning and, as we aspire to be outstanding, we know that our teaching and learning must reflect this aspiration. Blackfen School is organized into eight faculty areas, with each being home to one or more teaching subjects. On entry, students are placed into one of five communities in the school. Each community has a Community Leader and a Student Support Officer and is made up of students from years 7-11. All community tutor groups are mixed age. The sixth form is ordered into forms rather than communities. There is a strong commitment to providing for students with additional educational needs and we have a resource-based on-site provision for students with a visual impairment or a speech and communication disorder.
