St Bernadette School is a caring school in the very center of the parish community of St. Bernadette. We have 480 children in our school ranging from children aged 3 in the Nursery through to children aged 11 in Year 6. We strive for excellence for all of our children in the fullest way – both in academic terms and in the development of our children as well-rounded, compassionate young people. Our aims for the children are set out in St. Bernadette school values. At St Bernadette School children are taught and encouraged to think, to learn, to listen, to read, to write, to know when to speak and how to speak well, and to have compassion for each other. The Gospel values of Jesus Christ are the framework by which school operates. At St Bernadette School, we the adults share the belief that all of our children can succeed and feel successful and we support all of our children to help transform their lives. At St Bernadette School we seek to give children roots to grow and wings to fly. As a Catholic school community, we promote values that are both Catholic and British. By our words and actions, we live out the ‘British’ values listed by the government. However, we do much more than that, seeking to base all that we do on the teachings of Jesus Christ. Pupils have opportunities to have their voices heard through pupil questionnaires, PSHE activities, and class discussions. Pupils are encouraged to share their views about the school, these views are then considered by the staff and school council. Each class elects one member of their class to represent them on the school council. Pupils have the opportunity to vote annually for Head Boy and Head Girl. During general elections and other national referendums, the pupils are allowed to vote in school. All staff opinions are valued and adults are encouraged to share their ideas to achieve outstanding practice and to provide a forward-looking team. Pupils follow a positive behavior policy and clearly understand the rewards and sanctions that are used. The importance of laws and rules is consistently reinforced in the classroom, as well as through school assemblies. Pupils understand that rules are made to protect us. The school’s ethos is based on Gospel values. Assemblies promote respect for others and the importance of good manners. All pupils are taught the importance of self-respect, honest and open communication with others, and fair play. Pupils work collaboratively and value others’ opinions. Pupils are encouraged through RE and assemblies to understand the similarities and differences between Christianity and other faiths. This is achieved through direct teaching and by inviting members of our school community who are of another faith and by inviting members of the local community to talk to the children about their faith. We celebrate and recognize that we are all equal in God’s eyes and that we are all unique and special in some way our staff will actively challenge any pupils, staff, or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values. We are vigilant to any obsessive attitudes or behavior, which might give cause for concern and will notify appropriate authorities for advice. The curriculum of St Bernadette School is closely tied to our school vision ‘to give children roots to grow and wings to fly. The Gospel values of Jesus Christ underlie the whole curriculum. The curriculum is taught creatively and interestingly, which enables all children to achieve well and to gain significant knowledge and understanding of the world they live in. The curriculum of St Bernadette School has been designed to ensure that links are made between topics to develop skills, knowledge, and a real-life understanding. Opportunities have been planned to enable outdoor learning and where appropriate to use the local area and London to provide the children with experiences that will remain with them in the future.
