BU is named after Roberto Bellarmino (1542-1621), the brilliant Jesuit, who was a Cardinal and who was canonized in 1930. Our lush, 175-acre campus comprises more than 50 buildings, including the beautiful Siena residential complex, the W.L. Lyons Brown Library, the Norton Health Science Center, and Our Lady of the Woods Chapel. Centro, one of the most significant construction projects in Bellarmine's history, is a three-story structure connected by a glass atrium to one of Bellarmine's foundational buildings and is home to the Admissions Welcome Center, the Career Development Center, and state-of-the-art classrooms, as well as spaces for students to study and relax. Our recreational facilities include indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a fitness center, and athletic fields, including the Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, home to lacrosse, soccer, field hockey, and track & field. Our campus on three hills and our award-winning architecture evoke Tuscany's beautiful Italian hill towns, the birthplace of our patron, Roberto Bellarmino. Bellarmine faculty scholars are passionate about teaching. 180 full-time faculty, with 82 percent holding a Ph.D. or the highest degree in their field, teach at Bellarmine. A diverse student body from 43 states and 26 foreign countries attend Bellarmine. Our total enrollment is 3,759, of which 2,546 are undergraduate students. The ACT composite scores range from 22 to 27 for the middle 50 percent of students. Our student-faculty ratio is 12 to 1. Our average class size at Bellarmine is 20. There are 29 students or fewer in 84 percent of our classes. Teaching and learning like this do not take place at the perversities, and it shows in our high four-year graduation rates and the successful careers of our 23,905 graduates (as of fall 2017) throughout the world. Bellarmine Preparatory School is a Catholic college preparatory school in the Jesuit tradition of education. Under the Jesuits' inspired leadership, the school was founded in 1928 in an alone building on a remote hilltop overlooking the young city of Tacoma – a site it still occupies today. The Western Catholic Educational Association accredits Bellarmine. We are also in good standing with the National Catholic Educational Association and have a Certificate of Private School Approval from the Washington State Board of Education. An all-boys school for the first 45 years of its existence, in 1974, Bellarmine became the first such Jesuit school in the nation to go co-educational. In that year, St. Leo's and Aquinas Academy girls' schools merged with Bellarmine to create a consolidated Catholic high school for the Tacoma-Pierce County area. Bellarmine remains the only Catholic high school in the greater Tacoma area and continues to carry on the legacies and honor the alumni of St. Leo's and Aquinas Academy in addition to its own. Today, Bellarmine enrolls approximately 900 students from 4 counties, traveling from over 30 miles away to attend. The campus occupies 42 acres in the shadow of Mt. Rainier. It has grown over the years from one building to many, including fully wired and technologically integrated classrooms, a state-of-the-art library and computer facility, and top-line athletic and fitness facilities. While reliable, challenging college preparatory courses in traditional academic disciplines form the foundation of Bellarmine's academic program, each student's educational experience is not limited to the basics. A broad range of elective offerings is available in English, science, business, health/fitness, social studies, and the arts. Community service programs and religious education are also an integral part of the school curriculum. Students are also encouraged to participate in the many co-curricular activities offered, including athletics, the performing arts, spiritual retreat programs, student government, robotics, and many more. Bellarmine College Preparatory is a community of men and women gathered together by God for the purpose of educating the student to seek justice and truth throughout his life.
