Since opening our doors in 2012, Avenues New York has grown to become a vibrant global school in the heart of Manhattan. Our more than 1,500 students and families and 300 faculty members represent more than 40 countries, speak countless languages, and contribute unique backgrounds and experiences to our community. And starting with our youngest learners in our nursery program, every student at Avenues is immersed in a second language. As A New School of Thought, we strive to bring together the best of tradition and innovation. Our dedicated and impressive faculty modern, rigorous curriculum and committed parent partners all to contribute to the success of our curious and hard-working students. We are proud of what our community has accomplished in the first five years of our history, including sending off our first two graduating classes to the top colleges in the country. We will graduate students who are accomplished in the academic skills one would expect at ease beyond their borders truly fluent in a second language good writers and speakers one and all confident because they excel in particular passion artists no matter their field practical in the ways of the world emotionally unafraid and physically fit humble about their gifts and generous of spirit trustworthy aware that their behavior makes a difference in our ecosystem great leaders when they can be, good followers when they should be on their way to well-chosen higher education and, most importantly, architects of lives that transcend the ordinary. We will share our prosperity with those who need it, initially through traditional financial aid and, as we grow, in more innovative and broader-scale ways that leap the walls of our campuses. We will provide our faculty and staff members a special place to pursue the science and art of teaching. We want to align the rewards of teaching more closely with the value it brings to society, provide teachers opportunities to deepen their skills, and be a place where careers, in and out of the classroom, can flourish. We will advance education by setting an example as an effective, diverse and accountable school by continuously investing in ways to become better at what we do and by making available our discoveries, large and small, to colleagues in the cause of education. Avenues have a highly developed, coherent, intelligent and responsibly evolving “school design” that lays out the hundreds of important choices that go into the conception and execution of a fine school. The design process started well before the opening of Avenues’ flagship New York City campus in 2012. The creation of that design was a highly collaborative process, and Avenues is committed to maintaining a high degree of fidelity to the design. Avenues envision advanced assessment systems not typically seen in private education. The most important of these are not end-of-year tests, which have next to no value in helping teachers adapt instruction to meet the day-to-day strengths and weaknesses of their students. The most valuable assessment systems are real-time, in-class assessments to help teachers monitor the effectiveness of their day-to-day instruction. Avenues expect students both to be with teachers and students in a traditional school setting and to take advantage of the power and flexibility of new technology. Students enjoy a rich mix of instructional techniques. Part of the day is in traditional classroom settings other portions are with small teams of students on project-based work and some time is spent pursuing highly individualized learning, often with the aid of technology. This requires a serious commitment to technological infrastructure, which is embedded in the Avenues plan. Avenues are answering the current call for global readiness, delivering it in a system of schools around the world. We provide a unique and dynamic educational village—one school with 20 or more campuses in major cities in Asia, Europe, Africa, and North and South America—and a global orientation that includes language proficiency, the World Course, and international experience and study on continents around the world. Today, educational institutions everywhere tout goals of going global. The forces fueling this trend are social, economic, political, environmental, and technological. There are daily reminders of the interdependence and interconnectedness of all people and countries. As never before, citizens of the world will have to understand these dependencies and connections they will have to move easily across boundaries they will have to be comfortable with difference and ambiguity and they will have to speak languages other than their own. Avenues prepare its students for such realities. In Avenues’ classes at every level, faculty introduce authors, information, perspectives, and challenges that reference a global horizon. As one of the great international cities, New York itself serves as a laboratory for research projects, internships, and service-learning that allows students to understand its structure and function and, later, to compare it with other cities in the Avenues network. Through partnerships, videoconferencing, Skype, and online collaboration tools, students are connected from the outset with peers in schools abroad. To all of this, the Avenues faculty brings international perspectives, based on their experiential learning, academic training, and nationality. In these ways, traditional values and standards are recalibrated to introduce global sensitivities and attitudes to the learning process. View full school
