This includes showing care for the school’s environment and the wider community. We are a school to be proud of and we want our pupils to contribute to improving the school environment by putting their rubbish in one of the many bins provided throughout the grounds. St Augustine’s is also working in joint partnership with the West Neighbourhood team of Environmental Wardens and the Neighbourhood Action Unit (Police) to tackle and significantly reduce the amount of litter being dropped in and around the school area. This partnership has involved carrying out surveys to gain the views of school pupils, residents, and businesses and has also involved visits to the school on parents’ evenings. To help change students' attitudes towards dropping litter, educational workshops are being piloted for S1 pupils. We hope to maintain these strong links with the community in the future. At St Augustine’s CE Primary School we strive to do the best we possibly can for the children in our care. We believe every child in our care should receive the best provision and flourish in a safe, stimulating, supportive environment. We provide our children with opportunities they would not necessarily have access to, for example, a residential to Ghyll Head a visit to London, and free after-school clubs. Many of our children benefit from therapeutic interventions such as Counselling, Art Therapy, and Calm Spaces. These are provided to support the children’s mental and emotional well-being, as well as to develop their self-esteem and confidence. At St Augustine's we ensure that every child has full access to the National Curriculum. There are 10 subjects taught at Key Stage 1 and 11 subjects taught at KS2. The additional subject at KS2 is Modern Foreign Languages. In addition to the National Curriculum, we also make sure that every child has access to a PSHCE lesson every week. Our ethos which is built upon the Christian values of Love, Hope, and Forgiveness also incorporates a healthy body and mind and for this, we believe the teaching and practices of PSHCE are crucial. We want our children to leave us having real-life skills that will prepare them for their future and the next stages of their life so we encompass the Open Futures Curriculum and the skills of Grow it Ask it Film it and Cook it into our everyday lessons. We pride ourselves on being a diverse family and the teaching of British Values accompanied with the teaching of high-quality RE and the Rights Respecting Schools agenda ensure that every child is aware of their uniqueness and their rights as an individual. Children are taught from a very early age about celebrating diversity and respecting others' beliefs. To make certain our children grow up safely we teach them about keeping safe online and making informed choices about lifestyles and relationships. Furthermore, we equip our children with first aid skills to help them look after themselves as well as others. Every child has a voice and there are currently three Pupil Voice groups that take the lead in making changes and improving the school. This year the Government has again given all schools additional funding so that they can develop PE (Physical Education) in their schools. At St Augustine’s, we are spending the additional funding to ensure all staff is well trained to deliver quality first PE to all children in our school. Children in Key Stage 1 are developing their fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident. They are being taught to master basic movements in running, jumping, throwing, and catching, as well as developing balance, agility, and coordination, and are being taught to apply these in a range of activities. They are being taught to participate in team games and are developing simple tactics for attacking and defending. In dance, they are performing dances using simple movement patterns. Children in Key Stage 2 are continuing to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They are developing an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learning how to evaluate and recognize their successes. Children are being taught to develop their skills in running, jumping, throwing, and catching as well as playing competitive games such as badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders, and tennis. Our school is situated in the district of Handsworth, Birmingham. St. Augustine's is a one-form entry school within the Parish of Saint Augustine, catering to children in the 3 to 11 year age range. Children are grouped in each of the eight classes from Nursery to Year 6 according to age. Teaching is on a class basis. We have several initiatives that involve targeting small groups of pupils for Literacy and Numeracy plus art activities where pupils work with a range of providers. Saint Augustine's University was chartered as a "Normal School and Collegiate Institute" on July 19, 1867, by the Reverend J. Brinton Smith, D.D., secretary of the Freedman's Commission of the Protestant Episcopal Church, and the Right Reverend Thomas Atkinson, D.D., Bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina. Bishop Atkinson became the first president of the Board of Trustees, and Dr. Smith was the first principal. The new school opened its doors for instruction on January 13, 1868. In 1893, the School's name changed from Saint Augustine's Normal School to Saint Augustine's School. In 1919, the name changed to Saint Augustine's Junior College, the first year in which postsecondary instruction was offered. The School became a four-year institution in 1927. In 1928, the institution was renamed Saint Augustine's College. Baccalaureate degrees were first awarded in 1931. The College further extended its mission by establishing St. Agnes Hospital and Training School for Nurses to provide medical care for African Americans. It was the "first" School of nursing in North Carolina for African-American students and served as the only hospital that served African Americans until 1960. One of St. Agnes' most famous patients was boxer Jack Johnson. Following an accident that ultimately led to his death in 1946, Jack Johnson was taken to St. Agnes Hospital. Johnson was the first African-American world heavyweight boxing champion. The University also owns and operates a hidden gem, Saint Augustine's University Golf Course and Recreation Complex at Meadowbrook, a 9-hole golf course in Garner, NC. Founded as Meadowbrook Country Club in 1958, it was the area's only private golf club for African Americans. The club purchased 136 acres of former tobacco land and pioneered one of the country's first country clubs for African Americans. The University purchased Meadowbrook in 2007, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since the beginning of its existence, Saint Augustine's University has blazed the trails in academics. Alumna Anna Julia Cooper, a prominent writer, educator, and scholar, became the fourth African-American woman in the united states to earn a doctoral degree. Today, Saint Augustine's University is proud of preserving its legacy by continuing to ensure scholars are academically equipped to be the global change agents of tomorrow. Falcons not only soar in academics but also in athletics. The men's track and field team has experienced the victory of being Number #1 on numerous occasions. Saint Augustine's University alumnus, legendary head track and field coach and athletic director, George "Pup" Williams, has built a dynasty in track and field and cross country at the University. Since he began coaching in 1976, his track and field programs have won an astounding 36 national championships, including the 2014 and 2013 NCAA Division II Men's Indoor Championships and the 2014 and 2013 NCAA Division II Men's Outdoor Championship. St Augustine's first opened its doors in 1930 as an all-boys Marist boarding school. The first Marist school opened in Queensland and continues to allow students to be educated at a fine Catholic Marist school. St Augustine's provides boarding facilities for both boys and girls. While our boys are educated here at the College, our girls are educated at St Monica's College, a short drive from our Campus. The convenience of having one Boarding facility that caters to both boys and girls has proven to be a popular option for our parents. St Augustine's is the oldest continuing Marist school in Queensland. The Marist Brothers established the College in the growing town of Cairns in 1930 when the northern Queensland gold rushes were still a living memory. Its first members were three Brothers and ninety-six students. The College proliferated, doubling its staff and enrolment within a year. It soon established a reputation for academic achievement - presenting students for both Scholarship and Junior from its first year, and enrolling students for the Senior Certificate as one of only a handful of schools outside of Brisbane doing this at the time - as well as for its sports success, its cultural activities, and its strong spirit. By 1938 a new classroom wing building had been erected. The shortages and the threats of World War 2 provided unique challenges for the College. The boarders - then, most of the enrolment - temporarily moved to Lake Barrine on the Atherton Tablelands in 1942. After the war, pressure for boarding and day places continued, particularly during two periods of Brother Gildas's principalship in the 1950s and 1960s. By the 1960s, despite the gradual addition of other buildings, it was clear that there needed to be a massive building program. An ambitious master plan was implemented in the 1970s, which saw new classrooms, dormitories, hall, swimming pool, administration wing, and Brothers' monastery. Further land was purchased, and the Design and Technology Centre built. The 1980s and 1990s saw considerable development of the College's curriculum, the expansion of staff, the further upgrade of facilities and development of the grounds, and the consolidation of tradition. During the last decade, St Augustine's has enjoyed unparalleled academic success and considerable expansion of its cultural and sporting programs. Significant capital developments have included the construction of Lennon Hall, McLaughlin Theatre, the Gildas Centre, and significant ICT upgrades.
