Alexandra School is a member of the Eden Academy, a family of schools that specialize in meeting the educational needs of children and young people with a range of learning difficulties. Visitors often ask why we have geese for our school logo. We chose geese because of the way that they work together: when they are flying, when they are tired or injured, when they honk to encourage each other! At Alexandra School we have a strong sense of community: we know that we can learn and achieve much more together than we can apart. The geese have meaning for us and the children here, as do our five Alexandra School values which underpin everything that we do: Take care of others Accept and give respect Believe in the possibility and power of change Take personal responsibility for your actions Never tire of doing good We strive to provide excellent teaching and learning support with all the necessary facilities and resources to ensure that children have the best possible chance of success in their school careers. Pupils at Alexandra have opportunities to gain skills and knowledge across the curriculum, to develop self-confidence and respect for others, to become independent at school and in the wider world. We believe that positive achievement and positive behavior go hand in hand. We have clear rules, expectations, and boundaries which we expect all children and adults to accept we call them the Golden Rules. These rules are based on our school values and support the rights of children to be able to learn in an environment where all individuals are treated with respect and dignity. We display the Golden Rules in every classroom so that the whole school lives under the same umbrella of commonly held values. All of our pupils at Alexandra School present with moderate learning difficulties. Each pupil is valued for his or her individuality. They are supported to socialize with each other and make friends. Our pupils enjoy coming to school and demonstrate daily their love for learning. They are wholly included in the life of their class and the school. The children take pride in belonging to the school and once they feel that sense of belonging, they contribute themselves. The school aims to ensure effective and regular communication with parents and carers, to work collaboratively, and secure the best possible outcomes for all pupils. This communication takes the form of phone calls, emails, Fronter (password-protected school website), and opportunities to meet. Parents are regularly invited into school to share in their child's learning. As part of this, they will develop an understanding of the curriculum and celebrate achievement. We work closely with families to provide opportunities for workshops, discussion forums, and adult learning. We have strong and effective relationships with other agencies, which enable us to support families and signpost additional sources of help with required. Gate Gossip is our parent group, which meets at least once every half term. The group aims to encourage parents to come along and meet each other, discuss different topics and learn about all the different activities that go on at school. The group has a friendly and informal approach, with plenty of tea and biscuits on hand! We often invite guest speakers along to give us useful information about parent entitlements or parenting issues, e.g. sleep, healthy eating, behavior. We run workshops for parents, for example on healthy cookery or developing IT skills. Family Learning Sessions run once a week for blocks of five weeks each half term. Parents are invited to sign up for these sessions with their children. Each block of sessions has a theme, e.g. photography, storytelling, cookery. The sessions run at the end of the school day and are a great opportunity for parents and children to learn together. Families value the warm and friendly atmosphere of these free sessions. Parent Activity Sessions are organized by the class teachers once per term. Parents are invited into class to take part in an activity with their child. This might be anything from a reading session to a science and engineering challenge! These sessions allow parents to see their child learning in class and to meet other parents of children of the same age. As a way of extending the services offered by Alexandra School, we also organize a range of after-school clubs for the children including: Cookery club Street Jazz club Art club Martial Arts club Multi-Sports club Trampolining club
  7. Welcome to Alexandra Primary School. We are committed to providing a caring, welcoming, and happy environment that meets the needs and interests of each child. We aim to ensure that all pupils have the highest aspirations, attain their full potential and enjoy learning in a place that is stimulating, challenging, and creative. Inclusion is at the heart of our school and we believe that every child has the right to be successful, confident, and well-prepared for the world. A strong sense of self, along with high-quality teaching and an exciting holistic curriculum will develop a child’s passion for life–long learning where they can discover their strengths and talents. We can provide children with the best start to their educational journey. Alexandra is a thriving two-form entry primary school. We are very lucky to have a strong and dedicated staff group who are passionate about the quality of the education they provide and proud of our diverse community. The school is adjacent to the green and leafy Alexandra Palace and it has excellent transport links that allow us to experience the many museums, galleries and fantastic locations our capital city has to offer. We aim to create an inspirational community of learning rooted in living values, providing outstanding educational opportunities and experiences for all our children regardless of age, ethnicity, ability, and background. Our ambition for all pupils’ academic excellence is combined with an emphasis upon their personal growth as individuals, global citizens, and active learners. At Alexandra, we are committed to high achievement and equality of opportunity for all. Our positive, ambitious ethos and safe environment reflect this commitment. At Alexandra, we assert the rights of all children to learn. We actively foster a policy of opportunity, equality, and mutual respect to ensure that each member of our community is valued and achieves their full potential. The support of parents and carers is crucial to children’s education. At Alexandra, we work in partnership with parents, carers, and the local community and welcome their involvement. At Alexandra we want children to become independent, resilient, and enthusiastic learners. We provide all children with a broad, balanced, and differentiated curriculum that will excite and challenge them. Our mission is to ensure that every child leaves Alexandra Primary with confidence, a love of learning, and a self-belief that will stay with them always. Our Foundation Stage provides a secure, happy and caring environment in which children learn through purposeful and carefully planned play. The early years of a child’s life are an important stage where the foundations for future development are established. In the Foundation Stage, we foster the child’s interests, needs, and stages of development and offer activities that extend, enrich and develop potential both inside and outside the classroom. Purposefully planned, playful activities and first-hand experiences are the keys to learning, laying the foundations for the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. There will be a mixture and an appropriate balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities, depending on the children’s age and stage of development. The curriculum is carefully planned to ensure progression and continuity of skills in seven areas of learning. All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected. The three prime areas reflect the key skills and capacities all children need to develop and learn effectively to be ready for school. We are committed to ensuring that our pupils respect and follow the modern British values of individual liberty, democracy, mutual respect, the rule of law, and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves, and the consequences when laws are broken. Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school, we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and empowering education. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons. Whether it is through the choice of challenge, of how they record, or participation in extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given the freedom to make choices. Accepting that other people have their own faiths/beliefs/opinions and that this is tolerated and not be the cause of discriminatory behavior. This is achieved through enhancing pupils' understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them opportunities to experience such diversity. Assemblies and discussions involving prejudices and prejudice-based bullying have been followed and supported by learning in RE and PSHE. Members of different faiths or religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school.
  8. Alexandra Park School is a thriving and dynamic school that boasts excellent examination results and an outstanding curriculum experience in both the main school and the sixth form. The school is situated on a beautiful five-acre site adjacent to Durnsford Park within sight of Alexandra Palace. The school was opened in 1999 to create a great comprehensive school at the heart of the community. We have become that great local school offering top-class education alongside a wealth of opportunities. Ours is a rich, diverse and harmonious community with a culture of outstanding learning at its heart. Our school motto is “Success for all” and everything we do is planned to enable us to achieve this vision. At APS students will discover a supportive and friendly environment. High standards of discipline and behavior are expected and maintained thus ensuring a safe, structured working environment where every individual is encouraged to strive for excellence. Our objective is to foster confident and responsible citizens who are prepared to meet the challenges of life. Our students study a predominantly traditional curriculum with a focus on the core subjects of English, Maths, and Science. Our students achieve extremely well academically at the end of Key Stage 4. This year almost 90% of our students gained 5 or more A*-C grades at GCSE and with the more important measure of 5A*-C with English and Maths the pass rate was above 80%. We ensure our students make excellent progress from when they arrive in Year 7 and have repeatedly achieved outstanding attainment and value-added, putting the school in the top 5% nationally. The English and Maths departments’ performance has seen them both ranked in the top 1% nationwide. The sixth form was established 10 years ago. It has a comprehensive intake and offers an extensive range of courses. It is arguably the best performing sixth form in the area. The provision has been independently assessed (ALPS) as in the top 5% of institutions nationwide. Ofsted judged our sixth form as Outstanding in every category. In 2016 92% of our students achieved A*-C grades at A level, with 70% of these being A*-B and 43% being awarded the top A*/A grades. Two-thirds of students were successful in their application to one of the UK's top 30 universities and three-quarters of our students were able to follow the course they had chosen at their first choice university. Our students are highly motivated learners who make rapid progress from their starting points. We have an excellent curriculum and exemplary care, guidance, and support. Attainment is high and rising. Students are highly committed to their studies and are aspirational. Their ambitions are high as is reflected in large numbers of students progressing to the most competitive courses. There have been several changes to the Key Stage 3 curriculum recently. We aim to provide students with a broad, balanced, and challenging curriculum that fosters a love of learning and enables all students to reach their academic potential. We build on students’ achievements in Key Stage 2 to develop the breadth and depth of their knowledge, skills, and understanding, preparing them thoroughly for the end of Key Stage tasks, tests, and assignments in Year 9 and for taking GCSE and Vocational courses at KS4. Key Stage 3 students will be set pieces of work that encourage independent learning skills and, in particular, skills to preview and summarise information, use several different sources, organize and plan work and improve presentation. Students are encouraged to transfer skills between subject areas, see mistakes as part of the learning process, set challenging targets, and aim to achieve the best possible work. All Year 11 students will have a personal interview with a careers advisor. There is also a careers guidance ‘clinic’ focussing on interviews for Year 11 students (which is available to students in Year 10 too). Students in Years 10 and 11 have access to work experience placements where appropriate. Also, we hold a Sixth Form Open Evening for students and parents to prepare the student for post-16 progression. All students in Year 11 receive two personal Information, Advice and Guidance Appointments with senior staff and the sixth form team to discuss their options for post-16 study. In Years 12 and 13 numerous opportunities are promoted for students to gain knowledge and experience of a wide range of specific careers. In addition to events outside school, speakers and representatives from varied employment areas are invited into school to present to and meet with students. All students in Year 12 will have a personal interview with a careers advisor and all students are encouraged and supported to arrange and attend work experience placements. Once AS examinations have been completed (in June of Year 12) the enrichment program focuses almost entirely upon preparing for progression with a particular (but not exclusive) focus upon university applications. Many students also participate in preparatory programs organized by top universities for specific subject areas for example LSE Choice Pathways to Law, Target Medicine, and The Brilliant Club.

As a way of extending the services offered by Alexandra School, we also organize a range of after-school clubs for the children including: Cookery club Street Jazz club Art club Martial Arts club Multi-Sports club Trampolining club View full school
  12. View full school
