The Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS) at the University of North Texas (UNT) is the nation's first early college entrance residential program for gifted high school-aged students. If admitted into TAMS, students withdraw from their high schools and enter the world of university education at UNT, a Tier 1 research institution. Mentored by faculty at UNT, TAMS students tackle complex, real-world problems, working on solutions and breakthroughs in fields ranging from healthcare to energy consumption. TAMS at UNT serves as an essential pipeline for STEM education, nurturing the next generation of innovators.
The TAMS experience's goal is to develop the whole person – but the focus of the experience is on the academic program. Taking rigorous university courses working with university faculty in their scientific laboratories serving in research internships at medical schools or NASA, having the opportunity to engage in artistic pursuits, reflective philosophical discourses, and an exercise to enhance physical well-being are all part of the Academy experience.
Our purpose is to extend knowledge and understanding for each student far beyond where they are when they arrive. Our students take university courses – not high school courses – and the faculty are university professors who are also engaged in internationally recognized research. Note that the TAMS core curriculum requires the same science and mathematics courses that science and mathematics majors take. University faculty bring to the classroom a unique perspective that enriches what they teach. Academy students benefit uniquely from this knowledge and expertise. As a student selected for the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science, you join a unique living-learning community designed to promote academic achievement and personal growth. The Student Life Department will assist each student in adjusting to and making the most of this experience.
To maximize the TAMS experience, students are encouraged to get involved in all aspects of campus life. Involvement provides co-curricular opportunities that complete the educational process, foster student development, and prepare all students for life beyond the university.
The mission of the Student Life department is to establish and maintain a community living environment that is safe, fun, comfortable, accepting of diversity, and conducive to learning. This environment allows students to establish roots while at TAMS and, after two years, have a skill set that allows each student to prosper and excel at their next educational endeavor.
The mission of the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science is to provide an accelerated education for bright, motivated Texas high school-age students who have demonstrated a passion for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). The academy also seeks to provide its students with the companionship of intellectual peers to encourage students to develop the creativity, curiosity, reasoning ability, and self-discipline that lead to independent thought and action and aid students in developing the integrity that will enable them to benefit society.
