New York Military Academy is a private, co-ed, international boarding school serving grades 8 through 12. Located at the foot of Storm King Mountain in the heart of the Hudson Valley, NYMA has been producing character-driven leaders of industry, politics, the arts, and local communities for over a century. The mission of New York Military Academy is to develop our cadets in mind, body, and character to prepare them for further education and to be effective leaders and responsible citizens.
Every cadet is prepared for college with a program that is individually tailored. Qualified, conscientious teachers and small classes offer opportunities and success stories that make the NYMA educational experience so sought after and valued. Physical fitness dovetails with developing a cadet’s mind and all cadets participate in sports throughout the school year. The academy offers varsity and intramural teams that compete in a wide variety of sports including baseball, basketball, bowling, crew, cross country, fencing, football, golf, soccer, swimming, tennis, track & field, volleyball, and wrestling.
Developing good citizens requires developing the essentials of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. NYMA’s honor code, “A cadet will not lie, cheat, or steal, or tolerate those who do,” constantly reinforces the character lessons taught every day, in and outside of the classroom. Developing future leaders is one of the unique aspects of the New York Military Academy experience. Self-discipline, leadership, and citizenship are integrated into daily life for the Corps of Cadets. As cadets move up in rank, they are given increasing levels of responsibility in supervising, leading, and instructing fellow cadets.
Today the New York Military Academy is growing at an impressive rate. Recently, most of our students have not pursued military careers and instead have gone on to study at a university. Although this military focus has shifted, our fundamental objective and the values we instill in our cadets have not.
Developing peer-to-peer leadership skills is the core of our cadet experience. We strive to train our cadets to lead by example in and out of the classroom, on the sports fields, and in the barracks. Taking accountability for one’s actions and the actions of others is the foundation for the type of character building that all cadets experience throughout their time here. The result of this process is a sense of pride, confidence, and compassion that inevitably changes lives and communities.
At the New York Military Academy, we hold dear our obligation to offer our students more than just an education. Our mission to simultaneously develop our cadets’ minds, bodies, and character sets our graduates apart from all other college applicants.
