We are very pleased to welcome you to our school. We are a one form entry primary school, catering for children from 3 to 11 years old. As a church school, we serve the diverse local community and pride ourselves on our supportive, inclusive ethos.

Our vision statement highlights our commitment to providing all our children with the opportunity and encouragement to excel and achieve success in a stimulating and safe environment.

One of the advantages of our small school is the relationships that we develop with our pupils and parents and we work incredibly hard to ensure that the experience every child has at school is a positive and happy one. We always look for ways to further improve our school and some of the key areas that we are focusing on in the year ahead are set out in our School Development Plan (SDP).

We strive to deliver a curriculum that will inspire and challenge our children. Our vision statement outlines the aspirations we have for our school and its children. This is underpinned by our core values. As a Church of England school, much of what to do is shaped by our Christian values such as friendship, perseverance, and thankfulness.

These link to our shared British values:

    • Democracy
    • Individual liberty
    • The rule of law
    • mutual respect
    • Tolerance

We are a visionary school that seeks to instill a lifelong love of learning. Our core Christian values will inspire and prepare our children to lead successful and fulfilling lives".

St John’s is a small, caring Church of England Primary School. It is committed to supporting our pupils to be happy, successful, and fulfilled throughout their lives. We believe that everyone is unique and valued by God. We aspire to be a high achieving school that provides an outstanding education:

    • Being inclusive, celebrating diversity, and valuing all religions, faiths, cultures, and backgrounds
    • Providing a rich and stimulating curriculum that will inspire and challenge
    • Being a happy, healthy, and safe place
    • Providing excellent care, guidance, and support
    • With a strong partnership between school, parents, and the community

We seek to promote core values within our children, preparing them for a successful life, being:

    • Considerate and respectful with excellent manners
    • Confident, happy, independent, and self-motivated
    • Co-operative and collaborative
    • Honest and trustworthy
    • Resilient, hardworking, and determined
    • Highly principled with moral, spiritual, cultural, and social awareness, including shared British Values

At St John's we follow the New National Curriculum for all subjects and have worked hard to ensure that it is delivered in a way that is creative, inspiring, and challenging. We believe that the following key principles are important in our curriculum.

Breadth - We teach all subjects in the national curriculum and also try to provide ample opportunities to support children's spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development.

Balance - We try to ensure that sufficient time and weight are given to each subject so that children achieve well the national expectations.

Creativity - We believe that children learn best when they can make links, both within and between subjects. We teach our humanities and science through a cross-curricular approach, enabling our pupils to apply the core skills of literacy and maths within a context. We also try to deliver lessons in a variety of ways to support children with different learning styles and needs - visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic.

Inspiring and relevant - Children learn best when they are engaged and stimulated by their learning and we try to ensure that our curriculum reflects this with units of work that will enthuse and motivate.

Challenging - We have high expectations for all our children from when they enter Nursery to when they leave in Year 6. Our curriculum reflects this and, combined with our focus on consistent quality teaching, ensures our children leave St John's prepared for the next stages of their learning, including being "secondary ready".

Our topics are cross-curricular and have a wide range of trips planned to inspire the children's learning. Our children and parents particularly like our whole school projects such as science week or Carnival where we work together to bring learning to life and have fun.

We believe that all children should be challenged and stimulated to achieve the very best they can at St John’s. Lessons are carefully differentiated to ensure that teaching and learning are accurately matched to the needs of all pupils, including the ablest.

We also have a range of additional groups and activities to provide opportunities for our most able pupils to excel. These include our “Bookworms” reading group, “mad scientists club” and art club. We also have peripatetic music lessons to provide opportunities for our keen musicians.
