Learning is directed by experienced class teachers with each class receiving regular input from specialized staff in English, maths, science, French, history, geography, music, art, and PE/sport. Avon House prides itself on providing a highly specialized learning environment in which children can reach their full academic potential. Opportunities are provided for children to develop skills and understanding in a way that encourages curiosity, open-mindedness, and critical observations. The school has a Christian (non-denominational) ethos although the staff and pupils have diverse religious beliefs. We are a multi-cultural school embracing many cultures and ethnic backgrounds and these we celebrate.
At Avon House, we aim to support the abilities, personal qualities, and talents of all pupils. We aim to ensure that all pupils receive an education appropriate to their abilities. We provide teaching which makes learning challenging and enjoyable. We employ a wide variety of methods of recognition of potential. Younger children may be taken from class during their school day for intervention group work. This is provided for children who need extension activities and help to further develop problem-solving skills to achieve a higher level of the curriculum.
In prep school, children have opportunities to compete against other schools in general knowledge, science, and maths quizzes. These are prepared for by weekly subject-specific groups before an event. Children are selected for these teams by inter-house events and recommendations from class teachers. Those deemed talented in sport represent the school in teams against other schools and our sports coordinators encourage these children to engage in these activities in clubs outside school and in some cases children move on to represent the borough and beyond. Talented pupils musically have the opportunity for individual lessons and to sit exams in their chosen musical field and often go on to achieve high levels.
