Seoul Academy provides all students with vast opportunities for learning and community involvement. The entire Seoul Academy community shares the responsibility for building the academic success of each student. The mission of Seoul Academy is to ensure students achieve their maximum potential and lead humane, creative, literate, trustworthy, self-directed, and self-sufficient lives.
The two biggest aims of the Library Program are to help ensure every student is fully literate and also to stir excitement and satisfaction out of virtually every read for every student. 'Library class' is attended by elementary students only where students will participate in several reading activities or other support readings that all serve to advance their learning in this important field.
In addition to our core curriculum, we offer many other extra subjects at Seoul Academy. These subjects, in conjunction with the core curriculum, give the students a well-rounded education. While each is a self-contained subject, cross-curriculum projects and activities are encouraged and, when possible, teachers frequently assign projects that combine 2 or more subjects. While there is no specific deadline for application, an admission decision is made on a 'first-come-first-serve' basis. This means that the application process may end sooner whenever all available enrollment spots are filled. There is a clear advantage to applying early.
Elementary school education is the foundation upon which all future learning is built. As such, Seoul Academy is committed to providing each student with a safe and supportive learning environment. Our low student-teacher ratio ensures that teachers can give each student the attention they need to succeed. Our classrooms are bright and inspiring full of active, engaged learners. Our teachers are highly qualified, compassionate, and dedicated to providing meaningful learning experiences. Our curriculum is comprehensive and prepares students for the life and academic challenges in their futures. We strive to provide a well-rounded program that enables proficiency in all subject areas, the arts, physical education, and second language instruction. We care about the social and emotional well-being of each student. We model and expect students to exhibit the skills and attitudes for appropriate social interaction that will enable them to be confident and productive citizens in a global community. Our goal is for students to become motivated, independent learners, capable of achieving success in a complex, ever-changing world.
Seoul Academy's middle school program offers a dynamic curriculum ranging from the traditional core subjects (English, Social studies, math, and science) to a wide variety of other curricula including Chinese, Computers, and more. While there is a heavy emphasis on preparing students to meet the challenges of high school abroad in countries like America, Seoul Academy's small-size classes ensure that every middle student receives the individual care and attention to succeed in their particular pursuits beyond the middle school level. Indeed, one big aim of the middle school program is to ensure that every class is personalized, relevant, and stimulating. In the process, all students will study intensively and thoroughly all subject strands expected for high school entrance in a typical secondary environment.
At Seoul Academy Elementary, each child in grades PK-4 takes general music class twice a week. Music instructions are planned to meet the US National Standards for Music Education through the use of textbooks and other approved resources.
The lower grade levels first learn to use their voices to sing, their bodies to make movements, and percussion instruments to feel the rhythm to explore music and to develop their musicianship. The upper-grade levels continue to learn to sing, dance, play different families of instruments, read notes, ear train, and compose short pieces of music to further develop their musicality. We also offer an extracurricular activity, The Music Makers, for elementary students who want to have even more fun with music. Students experience various genres of music such as choral singing, musical plays, and instrument performances (ex. bucket drumming, recorder, boomwhackers). Furthermore, they learn self-discipline, teamwork, and commitment through being a member of an ensemble. The Music Makers perform at our school’s two major musical events held each year.
Our world still, and for the foreseeable future, uses print media as the primary source of news and information. With this in mind, we at Seoul Academy encourage all of our students to develop their reading ability continuously. Indeed, reading comprises several important skills including reading comprehension, critical thinking, drawing out key information in reading material, interpreting inferential material correctly, and connecting their own real-life experiences to the material they read. Summer reading allows students to maintain these skills learned during the regular school year.
Every year, Seoul Academy provides an updated list of summer reading books that we feel are quite beneficial in terms of advancing the skills described above. We encourage all students and their families to browse through the appropriate summer reading list according to the student's grade and choose one or more books that interest them and possibly provide a challenge for summer fun and learning.
