The International School of Turin is a not-for-profit, private school open to students from all over the world. IST offers a complete academic program in English from Early Childhood to Grade 12 through the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP).
The school's curriculum is international and leads to the completion of either the IST High School Diploma or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. The IB Diploma is recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education and is legally equivalent to the Italian Maturità. The school is registered in Italy and has been recognized by the Regione Piemonte.
Our faculty is committed to delivering our programs that help our students to grow and develop as learners and as people. Schools are all about people and relationships and learning relies on a positive and caring learning environment. IST values a family atmosphere where students, teachers, and parents work together and share a sense of community.
IST is a non-profit international school that has served local and expatriate families since 1963. IST has been accredited by the Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges since 1984. We are proud to be an authorized IB World School, providing a continuous IB education through the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), and IB Diploma Programme (DP) frameworks to students from Nursery to Grade 12.
Our guiding statements provide the purpose, direction, and framework for decision-making at IST. The IST Mission asks us every day to inspire lifelong learning and international mindedness, empowering each student to reach their potential.
Today, we educate 500 students from over 50 nationalities. IST students develop and attain the necessary knowledge, understanding, skills, and attitudes to be successful as they move through our school and life beyond graduation. Everyone in our community learns. We define learning as a process of making meaning through inquiry, thinking, experiences, feedback, and reflection.
In the early 1960s, members of the foreign community residing in Turin sensed the need for a school that could provide an international education for their children. In 1963, a small group of employees from American and other internationally interested companies in Turin like FIAT, Michelin, and Westinghouse decided to organize schools with an American curriculum. Classes were originally set up in space at the Caselle Airport in Turin, then moved shortly thereafter to a small building on Via Cottolengo in the center of Turin. The school defined its original purpose as to offer international instruction using a North American model for the children of the foreign community residing in Turin. The school had an enrolment of ten children.
Within five years the school had grown to 60 students representing twelve different nationalities and the decision was taken to move the school to expanded quarters at the Villa Virginia, near Superga, so that Middle School classes could be added, which it did in 1966.
The school continued to seek qualifications from North American, European, and International Baccalaureate institutions. It maintains joint and full accreditation with the New England Association of Colleges and Schools (NEASC) and the Council of International Schools in Europe (CIS). In May 2006 ACAT-IST obtained authorization to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB-PYP). In the summer of 2008, the school obtained authorization to offer the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB-MYP) making it the first school in Italy to offer all three IB programs and classifying IST as an IB World School.
