Under the Framework for Enhancing Student Learning, all Abbotsford School District schools are required to develop a long term plan to improve student achievement, one that maintains a balance on the intellectual, social and career development of students. Each year, each school develops an annual plan and sets individual goals to improve student achievement.

During 2019 our Learning Commons has continued to expand opportunities for staff and students. This year we have added a small sound studio in the back room, as well as a 3D printer. Mr. Jung has worked in cooperation with our Learning Commons instructor (Mr. Dekleva) to develop a 3D board game design unit. Students designed and printed dice and game pieces for this collaborative learning project.

We are also beginning to offer professional development opportunities for teachers! This year we have offered several unique opportunities for teachers to drop by on their prep blocks to take advantage of workshops and further their learning and professional development. The workshops have been a huge success. Our students will learn key academic skills - like reading, writing and math - to encompass the knowledge and processes associated with intellectual development. As learners and meaning-makers, students take subject-specific concepts and content and transform them into a new understanding.

A new course being offered, Environmental Science 11, is a lab based course where the content is pulled from the headlines. Students investigate different issues facing the planet today such as climate change, single use plastics, air pollution and acidification of our oceans. Through exploration and inquiry, students build a better understanding of the challenges facing the planet and learn about sustainability.

At the end of each semester, Yale's senior art students celebrate their accomplishments with an art show. The entire school, as well as parents are invited to come and see students' best two and three dimensional work. The show is catered by our very own foods classes. In ceramics class students get an in depth study into clay and its properties. Student learn hand building techniques as well as get to use the potters wheel to throw bowls, mugs, and vases. In Art class students engage in a variety of wet and dry medium as a vessel to express their creativity.

Our students will study personal and human social skills and as they relate to students' identity in the world - both as individuals and as members of their community. We are learning that personal and human social skills encompass the abilities students needs to thrive as individuals, to understand and care about themselves and others, and to find and achieve their purposes in the world.

The Advanced Placement (AP) is a program in the United States and Canada (currently offered at Yale Secondary) that was created by the College Board offering college-level curriculum and examinations to high school students. American colleges often grant placement and course credit to students who obtain high scores above a certain number on the examinations. The AP curriculum for the various subjects is created for the College Board by a panel of experts and college-level educators in each subject. For a high school course to have the AP designation, the course must be audited by the College Board to ascertain it satisfies the AP curriculum. If the course is approved the school may use the AP designation and the course will be publicly listed on the AP Ledger.

Apart from offering Advanced Placement classes, Yale has an outstanding reputation for academic excellence offering Honours courses throughout the grade levels.

Above Picture: AP Chemistry students Sam Lee, Jayden Yoo, Andrea Wong, Jake Johnston and Nafeel Ahmad recently competed in the Trinity Western University Lab Skills Competition. An academic scholarship exam was a large part of the evaluation. Some ten teams from all over the Fraser Valley totaling nearly 40 students wrote the exam. The Yale team members placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. WHOA - some kind of super academic performance.
