Crescent's mission, Men of Character from Boys of Promise, recognizes every student's potential and acknowledges their unique abilities. At Crescent School, we embraced a rigorous learning environment driven by a relevant curriculum of study and fostered through relationships with the very best teachers and mentors. We are fundamentally committed to providing care, empowerment, clear boundaries and high expectations, and effective ways for boys to use their time well. Also, we seek to develop boys' commitment to learning, positive values, social competencies, and personal identity. Our boys thrive because they are known and understood.
Our teachers and staff are part of a long and rich tradition in which energy, enthusiasm, and engagement complement the challenges and complexities of boys' growth and development. They are deeply committed to modeling the School's core values of Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, and Compassion through every interaction. As learners, they strive for mastery in their craft and consistently hone their approaches that shape, guide, and support boys' development.
Our expertise in boys' education is supported by world-class facilities and expressed through a robust academic and co-curricular program, including the arts, athletics, business, outreach, and robotics. As well, the broader community of alumni and parents takes great pride in the School and is committed to its continual progress. At Crescent School, we know that relationships are the keystone of learning – everything we do assures our boys they are valued and valuable.
Crescent's mission, Men of Character from Boys of Promise, recognizes that boys with curious minds and open hearts can develop in a manner that will fit their mission in life, whatever it might be. Our exceptional staff of learners and leaders nurtures the intellectual, moral, and social development of each of our boys. Our inclusive community of alumni, parents, and friends is fully engaged, supporting a diverse and rigorous learning environment.
Crescent School is founded by J.W. "Jimmy" James to provide a solid education in "…a far gentler place than the fierce caning world" of other private schools at the time. Educating boys in Grades 5 to 8, Crescent's new locations included 43 Rosedale Road and 76 Collier Street.

For our youngest Crescent boys in Grades 3 to 6, the Lower School provides learning experiences and opportunities that guide them on their life-long journey to becoming Men of Character. Crescent's core values of Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, and Compassion guide the boys in their day-to-day life. The boys are reminded of these values regularly and learn that these words resonate on a larger stage than the classroom, sports field, or playground. These values infuse every aspect of our Crescent community.
All of our programs support our boys in reaching their goals and discovering their limitless potential. Our exceptional faculty lead the boys to explore their imagination and their world. Our boys learn by reflecting on their learning, by investigating, by playing, by being creative and understanding how building positive and meaningful relationships with friends and adults can enrich their lives.
Every step of the way, our teaching practice is informed by expert research on how boys learn. Crescent's mission, Men of Character from Boys of Promise, is at the core of everything we do, because "a man of character is principled, wise, resilient and engaged." In the Lower School, your son will be embraced by a community that nurtures his unique talents, unlocking the door to learning and engaging him in his character development.
Crescent School follows the overall and specific expectations of the Ontario Ministry of Education and then enriches each subject level to challenge our students. Each September, Crescent administers the Canadian Test of Basic Skills (CTBS) to every Lower School student. This provides us with a general academic baseline for our boys and allows us to monitor their progress, and create individualized academic programs throughout their Lower School years.
For Crescent boys in Grade 7 and Grade 8, Middle School provides diverse academic and co-curricular programs that allow them to discover their passions and talents. These programs are challenging and supportive. They are always connected to our mission, Men of Character from Boys of Promise, and our core values of Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, and Compassion.
Early adolescence is a unique time in a boy's life. Our work in the Middle School reflects a research-driven understanding of what boys need at this age. We know that relationships matter most. That is why our Mentor program is at the heart of our Middle School culture.
