Thank you for your interest in Brooklin Mill Montessori School. We are proud of our outstanding learning environment in the village of Brooklin, North Whitby, for children from infants (age 12 months and up), toddlers, to preschool, to elementary grade 4.
Our fully licensed School operates in a heritage brick building, situated on 1.1 acres of park-like green space in the heart of Brooklin. From the moment you step on the School grounds, you will be transformed by the serenity of the surroundings. This is a place to help children focus their minds, build concentration and competency, to learn how to think for themselves and think about others. From this grows confidence and self-esteem. How better could we prepare a child for life and all of the learning experiences to follow. We would welcome the opportunity to provide you with a personal tour of our School and answer any questions you may have.
Brooklin Mill Montessori School offers Montessori classes from September to June, following the Durham District school year calendar. Summer School programs are available during July and August. Children are welcome to enroll throughout the year, depending on space availability. Montessori classes operate in mixed-age groupings to encourage children to learn from and respect each other. Our class age groupings overlap to facilitate best each child’s individual needs and pace of development. Placement decisions are done in consultation with parents and depend on each child’s academic and social/emotional readiness.
Half-day programs are available 3, 4, or 5 days per week in the mornings or afternoons. Full-day program schedules range from a minimum of 10 days per month to 5 days per week. Let us discuss your family’s needs. Summer School is offered for eight weeks during July and August. The summer program is entirely flexible for scheduling your family’s vacation time! The School includes light academics, weekly theme-based activities, and plenty of outdoor fun.
Our lunch program is optional for students registered in our Senior Casa / Elementary programs, and mandatory (as a condition of licensing) for our Pre-Casa and Junior Casa students attending a full-day class. Our lunches are provided by Choice Children Catering, a family-owned local small business with over 20 years of experience. For more information, Private bus services are available from T.G.T. Inc. Their mini yellow school buses transport children between Brooklin Mill Montessori School, the local Brooklin public and Catholic schools, and home addresses in Brooklin. The Montessori elementary environment responds to the elementary-aged child’s expanding view of the universe. Some of the same materials from the preschool classroom are present, to be used in more complex ways according to the child’s development. Besides, many new materials are introduced as the child moves toward abstract thinking, developing his imagination to embrace concepts larger than his immediate environment.
Like Montessori preschool, the Montessori elementary curriculum is interdisciplinary, allowing science, social studies, the arts, language, and math to converge in studies guided by the child’s questions. Emphasis is placed on the connections between the different areas of study, not on the mere presentation of detail.
Parents often ask whether the Montessori elementary program, with its emphasis on small-group activity, provides enough social development opportunities. Moreover, they may wonder whether a multi-age class affords enough same-age peers for each child to have a wide choice of friends.
The Montessori elementary classroom, in many ways, resembles an extended family. Everyone knows everyone. Work is shared, and learning is vitalized by social life. There are free communication and movement. The exchange of facts and discoveries becomes second nature. Relationships and their complexities are supported by alert and sensitive adults trained to observe and enhance social interaction, not to repress it.
Multi-age groupings mean more small-group options relative to ability and interest. They also mean maximizing each child's potential in an environment that has a place for everyone, providing a profound sense of belonging. The presence of a wide range of ages and abilities builds in each child's tolerance and appreciation for people’s differences.
