WE ARE an independent, Catholic, college preparatory school for girls offering instruction from PreK 3 through grade 12. Academy of the Sacred Heart, founded in 1821, is an independent Catholic school enrolling girls in pre-primary through grade twelve with residential accommodations for students in grades seventh through twelve.
As a member of the worldwide network of Sacred Heart Schools, the Academy of the Sacred Heart emphasizes the total development of mind, body, and spirit through an education rooted in the Catholic tradition. Students thrive in an environment characterized by seriousness of purpose, love of learning, creativity, and meaningful relationships. The Sacred Heart mission seeks to develop within each student a personal & active faith in God. “Rooted in the Catholic tradition, the Academy welcomes people of diverse beliefs and seeks to instill in its students a deep understanding and respect for people of different cultures and religions.”
The goal at the Academy is to develop lifelong learners, emphasizing individual thought and experiential instruction, religious curriculum, active learning, small classes, and a professional faculty committed to the learning styles of young women. When it comes to preparing young women for college and life, it is essential to remember that girls learn differently from boys. We get that at the Academy, which is why we take our students out of the textbooks and into the world of learning – encouraging them to be problem solvers and independent thinkers.
This independence helps prepare our students for whatever challenges life brings while also giving them the chance to discover who they are and, more importantly, who they want to be. The Academy offers an innovative program that focuses on the unique educational needs of girls.
Sacred Heart education is of the very essence that it be genuinely concerned for each student’s total development: intellectual, physical, emotional, and spiritual. Sacred Heart education intends to educate the “whole child.” We strive to educate our students to be faith-filled and active leaders of tomorrow. We teach according to the ways that each gender learns best, and we encourage our students to identify their talents and develop them to their fullest potential.
Current research points to the effectiveness of single-gender education for young women. Today, the demands placed on women emphasize the need to develop a sense of confidence and ability. Graduates of girls’ schools account for a significant percentage of women in leadership positions.
