At VMI, you declare a major when you apply, so from the beginning, you are in classes with professors in your area of interest who will work with you throughout your entire cadetship. VMI faculty members are known for their expertise, teaching excellence, mentorship, scholarly engagement, commitment to service, and undergraduate research encouragement.
VMI Summer Session is available to facilitate a cadet's progression toward degree completion by offering academic credit courses during the summer, consistent with the academic program. Non-VMI students are also eligible to take courses during VMI's summer session.
The Summer Undergraduate Research Institute (SURI) provides a structured program and financial support for research projects conducted during VMI. Cadets engage in in-depth research with their faculty mentor while receiving course credit.
The VMI Summer Transition Program (STP) is designed to improve incoming cadets' academic and physical fitness before matriculation.
The STARTALK Arabic Summer Program at VMI is open to all high school juniors, seniors, and college students (incoming VMI rat class not permitted). It is designed for novice-level students wishing to have a strong foundation in Arabic and Arab cultures.
Upon entry into VMI, each cadet is assigned a faculty advisor who will work with the cadet until graduation unless the cadet subsequently changes academic major.
The Miller Academic Center provides academic success programs and services that proactively facilitate the successful transition and academic performance of cadets throughout their VMI time. We support academic success, personal growth, and development of life and leadership skills for cadets in a manner that promotes self-awareness, self-determination, and self-advocacy. ODS also serves as a resource to the VMI community to encourage awareness and understanding regarding disabilities issues in higher education.
Career Services assists cadets with career planning, career experiences, and employment or graduate education opportunities leading to successful transitions following graduation. VMI offers several exciting special programs that enhance the primary academic experiences provided in our majors and minors.
International programs include international military academy exchange programs, semester-abroad programs, summer-abroad programs, international internships, cultural exchanges, and study tours. The VMI experience emphasizes the value of service by encouraging cadets to serve their communities. Classroom experiences, combined with regular community projects, develop a strong sense of charity and service to others.
Virginia Military Institute considers its financial aid program an investment in its cadets' futures. It assists students who would not attend and provide aid to cadets with superior academic abilities without such aid.
To be considered for financial aid at VMI, students must complete both the VMI Financial Aid Application and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for each enrollment year. VMI offers need-based scholarships, grants, and loans based on your results.
It is the mission of Virginia Military Institute to produce educated, honorable men and women, prepared for the varied work of civil life, imbued with the love of learning, confident in the functions and attitudes of leadership, possessing a high sense of public service, advocates of the American democracy and free enterprise system, and ready as citizen-soldiers to defend their country in time of national peril.
To accomplish this result, the Virginia Military Institute shall provide qualified young men and women undergraduate education of the highest quality – embracing engineering, science, and the arts – conducted in and facilitated by the unique VMI system of military discipline.
To fulfill the mission far into the 21st century, VMI has developed 14 points to deliver excellence. These are the broad goals that directed a close self-examination of all aspects of the Institute. This work included the Board of Visitors, faculty, staff, alumni, and cadets. It focused on four principal areas: the academic, the military, the athletic, and the cultural/physical environment at the Institute.
From that effort flow scores of large and small undertakings that are moving VMI into the future. Themes of commonality of purpose, synchronization, and integration guide those undertakings. The focus areas and themes create a synergy that provides an outstanding education for life when taken together.
A reformed core curriculum provides the educational foundation upon which to build the essential characteristics of the citizen-soldier. Focusing on a limited number of high-quality majors, minors, and interdisciplinary programs ensure programs' overall excellence. The Institute will continue its tradition of educating to meet a changing nation's needs by establishing a more balanced distribution between engineering, science, and the arts, with more than half the degrees awarded in engineering and the sciences.
